Beard Field House-Wheaton College - Norton, MA
RESULTS
NORTON, MA - Back in January LHS's Girls Shuttle Hurdle relay squad missed the New Balance Indoor Nationals qualifying mark of 30.76 seconds by just four-hundredths-of-a-second when they competed in the 4x50y Shuttle event at Division 1 Relays. Tuesday, the team of senior captains Katie Atkins and Jada Solomon, along with senior Amandine Mangon and freshman Emily Hoefkens had another shot to earn a spot a Nationals.
In the prelims, the girls ran a solid time of 30.99 seconds, but clearly needed to be better in the finals to achieve their goal. When the gun fired in the finals, Atkins was out to a fast start on the opening leg, but unfortunately the girls could not dip under 30.80 seconds in their second run of the day. However, Atkins noticed that something seemed off after she finished her last hurdle. In fact, something was off. Her final hurdle was set to 30 inches, when the appropriate height is 33 inches. This meant that their performance did not count, and the officials awarded them a re-run to because of their error. And so, on their third and final chance Atkins, Solomon, Hoefkens, and Mangon made the most out of their trip to Wheaton College. Their solo effort finished in a time of 30.54 seconds, which was not only well under the Nationals standard, but also broke the previous LHS record in the event set in 2009!
