Reggie Lewis Center - Boston, MA
RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - Tuesday, sophomore Simon Tandeih traveled in to Reggie Lewis to compete at in the Pentathlon. The event features athletes competing in the 55m Hurdles, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, and then finishing off their day with the five grueling laps of the 200m oval that make up the 1000m. Every mark earns athletes point totals, and the one with the highest point total from all five events is the winner. The event is both a physical grind, as well as a mental test unlike any other in the sport of track & field, as athletes need to mentally prepare and reset five times in the course of one day to compete at their best. Last spring, Tandeih showed potential in the event when he placed ninth overall with 2789 points in the Outdoor version of the pent at the MIAA Division 1 Championships. However, after months of growth and development, hopes were high that Tandeih was ready to take a big step forward in the event. The sophomore did not disappoint.
He began his day with a PR of 7.94 second in the hurdles, which earned him 865 points. Tandeih followed up that mark with a leap of 6.08m (19'11.25") in the Long Jump, which was just inches off his personal best. In the Shot Put, he managed a throw of 11.53m (37'10"). That throw made it two PRs in the first three events before Tandeih headed to the High Jump apron. There, Tandeih cleared 1.67m (5'5.75"), and after four events he was within striking distance of LHS Class of 2011 great and NCAA Division III All-American Matt Hunter's school record of 3220 points in the event. Tandeih's point total was 2567, which meant that he needed to run 3:01 for 1000m to break the record. When the gun went off, Tandeih locked right into his goal pace, and for three laps looked like he would find the strength in his tired legs to take a piece of history home for himself. However, as often happens to multi-event athletes, the weight of the day's events got the better of him. Tandeih battled for the final two laps to cross the line in 3:11.60, which gave him a final score of 3122. That mark represented a significant improvement over his last run in the pentathlon last spring, and now ranks him third in LHS history in the event.
