BOSTON, MA - The fourth and final day of the New Balance Indoor Nationals saw The Minutemen compete in four events. The day began bright and early as the Boys and Girls 4x55m Shuttle Hurdle relays were in action in the morning. In the afternoon, it was LHS's Boys 4x800m and 4x400m relays that closed out both the meet and the Indoor Season.
Junior Ryan Zhang, senior McKenna O'Hare Gibson, senior Jacob Pan, and sophomore Simon Tandeih were called on to run in the seeded section of the Boys Shuttle Hurdles. After a fall in the event last year ruined the team's chance at a top finish, the 2024 squad was excited to deliver on the big stage. In the end they turned in a strong run of 31.77 seconds that landed them 18th overall, and with that, a new LHS record. The Lex Girls' team of senior captains Katie Atkins and Jada Solomon, along with freshman Emily Hoefkens and senior Amandine Mangon were also able to dip under the previous school record in their race. Their time of 38.21 seconds landed them 30th overall. The 2023-2024 "Burger Squad" is now a perfect 4 for 4 when it comes to breaking the LHS Shuttle Hurdle records - 50yd and 55m - and can stake its claim to being perhaps the finest top to bottom boys and girls indoor hurdle crew in LHS history. While they may not have the hardware or the individual records of previous groups, their depth was unmatched, and it was a thrill to see it all come together this season.
Other Highlights from the Track
Now that the 2023-2024 Indoor Track & Field Season has come to a close, it is worth looking back at what will undoubtedly be a season remembered for years to come. This was the first time the Lex Girls competed an Indoor Season without beloved Coach Emmett O'Brien at the helm since 2009. LHS distance legend Ted FitzPatrick's 33-year old 2 Mile record was broken. And despite losing a historically great group of athletes to graduation last spring, The Minutemen came together as one track family to continue to cement itself as one of the finest programs in Massachusetts. By the numbers it was a tremendous winter. 118 Middlesex League Championship qualifying performances, 59 for the Division 1 Championships, 28 National qualifiers, 9 LHS records, 1 All-American, and the list goes on. While the individuals numbers are impressive, Track & Field is a team sport where those individuals must understand that by focusing on a team first approach, each will perform at a higher level in order to support the team. That has become the hallmark of the Lexington High School program, and the 2023-2024 squad embodied that mindset. They sacrificed for each other, stepped aside to let others shine, and continuously found the strength to push beyond their limits when the team needed them most. It was a privilege to watch our student-athletes grow together throughout the season, and we look forward to continuing that success this spring!
