BOSTON, MA - The Minutemen had their lone varsity meet of the season at the fastest Indoor Track in the world on Tuesday evening. To top things off, it was against one of their chief rivals, Reading. On the boys' side, the meet quickly turned into a route as The Minutemen swept the first two events on their way to a 79-21 victory. However, the Rockets gave the Lex Girls everything they could handle throughout the four hour meet. In the end it was LHS's Bomb Squad that came through to put the team over the top, as The Minutemen won by a score of 51-49.
The meet was off to a fast start as the Rockets' superstar senior Katie Caraco ran 8.90 seconds to win the hurdles over LHS senior Amandine Mangon (9.66) and freshman Emily Hoefkens, who ran a PR and MIAA Division 1 Championships qualifying time of 9.71. However, sophomore Audrey Deardorf (7.56) helped her team flip the script in the 55m Dash, as she bested Reading's Kamryn Encarnacao by one-hundredth of a second. Deardorf's narrow victory left the score knotted at 9-9 as action moved to the oval. There, the Lex Girls began to separate themselves as freshman Callie Glenn (5:30.34), junior Lucy Kontos (5:37.16), and sophomore Nadia Abdinoor (5:40.69) all used PRs to break out the golden broom and sweep the Mile. Next up, sophomore Rose Neely gutted her way to victory in the 600m with a PR of 1:44.97. That effort was followed by junior Caroline Kvaal (1:47.91) who picked up another point with a third place finish. It was another one-three finish in the 1000m for The Minutemen as Kontos (3:17.35) and sophomore Prachi Aggarwal (3:22.17) did the job. LHS then got a big lift by Felice Haverly in the 300m. After she already cleared the High Jump bar at 5'0", the sophomore came through with a PR of 43.43 to win the event, and pick up five key points for her team. While the Lex Girls were lighting it up on the oval, Reading was jumping its way back into the meet. Caraco led her team to a one-three finish in the High Jump with a clearance of 5'4". And, her leap of 16'11.25" in the Long Jump led to a one-two finish that earned eight more points, and gave Reading life with four events to go. However, LHS's Distance Squad responded in a big way to Reading's surge. Sophomore Meghan Caldera (12:16.60) grinded her way away from Reading freshman Maria LaFrancesca to take the win in the 2 Mile. And, Phoebe Jiang (12:40.47) had the debut of all debuts to pick up a much needed point with a third place finish. With that, the score stood at 45-36 with only the Shot Put and Relays to go for each team to get to the magic win number of 51 points. Then, all eyes turned to the Shot Put sector. After a foul on her first throw, senior Quin Tandeih found the best throw of her season - 30'10.75" - in the second round. That throw won the event, and, along with fellow classmate Makalah Brown's throw of 25'10.50" to pickup third place, earned the six points that were needed to put LHS over the top and seal the victory.
LHS's Boys had a strong meet across the board, but perhaps no athlete stood out more than senior Sean Crogan. The Johns Hopkins Lacrosse commit has been nothing short of a revelation for the Track & Field team this season. After the Bomb Squad graduated three athletes - Kaden Cassidy, Allen Jiang, and Jack Ngo - who have their names on six throwing records at LHS, the throws group was in need of a new injection of talent. Crogan has proved to be just that as he steadily improved in the Shot Put throughout the month of December. On Tuesday he made the jump his team needed. The senior came in having never thrown 40 feet with the 12lb ball. Against Reading he threw at least 41-feet three times - his best throw landed at 42'8.25" - and won the event going away. Along with Crogan, a nod has to be given to the Mid-D boys. The 600m saw Harvard Soccer commit Nayan Das (1:24.71) and junior Nathan Cunningham (1:24.75) turn in MA #10 and #12 times respectively to go one-two in the event. Not to be outdone, the 1000m featured an MA #5 performance from junior captain Max Zhang (2:36.54), as well as an MA #13 time by fellow classmate Zach Barry (2:37.68), which was also good enough for one-two finishes for their team.
