Arlington Dual Meet

Boston University Indoor Track & Tennis Center - Boston, MA
RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - Thursday morning, despite missing many athletes due to winter break, The Minutemen went up against neighboring Arlington in what ended up being nothing short of a route by both the boys and girls squads. The girls were lead by senior captain Kesinia Sortor and junior Pauline Steines who went 1-2 in both the Mile and the Two mile en route to a 88-12 thumping of the Spy Ponders. On the boys side the hurdlers set the tone for The Minutemen. Junior Liam Cotter got things off to a fast start by winning the 55 meter High Hurdles in a personal best and Middlesex League Championships qualifying time of 8.49 seconds. Fellow junior Shymon Samsel was second in a personal best of his own (8.72 seconds). The boys would go on to dismantle the Spy Ponders by a score of 91-8, their largest margin of victory this season.
Breakout sophomore Lina Jafaar finally dipped under the Division 1 Championships qualifying mark in the 1000m. She won the race in a personal best time of 3:12.32. Along with Jafaar, freshman Mari McBride was able to notch her the first victory of her high school career. McBride matched her personal best of 4'10" in the High Jump, and she would pick up a third place in the 55m Dash (8.35 seconds). In addition to her efforts, junior Lily Sheth debuted in the 300m in winning style. She took the event in 43.93 seconds, qualifying for the League Meet along the way. Another big performance for The Minutemen came from the 4x200m relay team of junior Keena Gao, sophomore Eileen Cannon, sophomore Aleia Gisolfi-McCready, and McBride. The team combined to run a season best time of 1:50.16, which bested their previous time by over four seconds.
On the boys side, senior captain Eli Gappelberg opened and closed the meet for The Minutemen on the oval. He began the day by running the fastest Mile in the League so far this year (4:32.12), and qualifying for the Division 1 Championships in mid-February in the process. At the end of the day he would come back to help the 4x400m relay take another victory with his unofficial split of 54.5 seconds. Sophomore Andrew McGovern had a productive all around day. After winning the High Jump with a leap of 5'5", he went on to take second in the Long Jump with a jump of 17'5.75". However, he saved his best performance for last. In his primary event, the 600m, McGovern blasted away from the field winning the race in 1:24.57 and qualifying for the Division 1 Meet in the process. Along with McGovern, was fellow junior Selvin Backert who won the 1000m in a Division 1 qualifying time of 2:39.12.
A group of Lexington throwers had the rare opportunity to compete in the Weight Throw at the tail end of the meet. In an event that could be described as the indoor alternative to the Hammer Throw, the boys toss a 25lbs weight while the girls have 20lbs in their hands. For the girls, senior captain Janna Lee had a strong toss of 39'1". On the boys side, junior Yanni Zavaligakos was able to get one out 43'5". However, it was junior Michael Gupta who stole the show. After the dropping the farthest Shot Put throw on the day (45'4.50") earlier in the meet, Gupta launched the weight 59'2". That throw put him within reach of the 61'0" New Balance Indoor Nationals championship standard and was certainly an impressive result in his first time competing in the event.

The Minutemen are back in action next Friday night against archrival Woburn. On the boys side the meet will all but determine who takes home the Liberty Division Regular Season Crown, while the girls will be looking to exact revenge on a Tanners squad who last year handed The Minutemen their worst defeat in nearly a decade. The meet - at BU - is set to go off at 4:30pm.
