BOSTON, MA - After Cotter's strong performance at Tuesday's Boys Pentathlon, it was the girls chance on Wednesday and star junior Rachel Caldwell-Glixon "RCG" brought her A-game to Reggie. Last spring RCG put up 2858 points in the Spring Pentathlon to set the outdoor school record. Her mark was just shy of former Lexington High School great Ally Crooke's 2009 indoor record of 2865 points. With that in mind the LHS junior had the record on her mind as she headed into Boston.
After a strong time of 9.07 seconds in the 55m High Hurdles (778 points) it was clear that RCG was ready to make a run at the record. However, her chances were almost derailed in her best event, the High Jump. Coming in with a season best jump of 5'2" under her belt, RCG only managed to clear 4'9.75". That difference in height cost her over 100 points but despite the setback the junior responded in a big way in her next two events. In the Long Jump, where RCG had not cracked 15 feet all season, she made a monstrous leap of 16'8" that earned her 581 points. In addition to being a personal best, her leap was the farthest by any LHS athlete this year by over half a foot. Next up was the Shot Put, where again RCG was able to come up big. Placing third among 124 competitors, her throw of 30'5.75" was another personal best and grabbed her 483 more points to put her within striking distance of the record with one event remaining. Heading into the final event - the 800m - RCG stood at 2430 points and needed to run under 2:55 in order to take down Crooke's record; she did that and more. Finishing in a time of 2:49.73, RCG scored 466 points and her final score of 2896 points established the new LHS record in the event.
After a performance like the one turned in by the LHS junior on Wednesday, it cannot be overstated how RCG's talent and versatility have helped the 2018-2019 Girls Team. In addition to the school record in the Pentathlon, RCG finished the season with LHS's top mark in four other events and was third in another. Still with a spring season and her senior year ahead of her, RCG has already stated her claim as the best athlete to ever come through LHS's Track & Field team. It will be fascinating to watch how far her hard work and dedication to a wide rang of events takes her over the rest of her high school career.
