BOSTON, MA - On Thursday evening The Minutemen began their Middlesex League schedule against Winchester. Throughout the meet the girls had their hands full with a tough Sachems squad. As the 2 mile, the final event before the relays, started off the meet still hung in the balance. Junior Danna Ofek went up against the only Middlesex League competitor to beat her during the Cross Country season, Winchester junior Ella Aldrich. After a conservative first mile, Ofek surged to the lead and slowly broke away from the Sachems' top runner. She won the race in a personal best and Division 1 qualifying time of 11.57.62. With her win and a third place picked up by freshman Clara Fu (12:40.29), the victory was sealed for The Minutemen 52-48. In addition to Ofek's strong opener, the junior class showed up big for The Minutemen. Rachel Caldwell-Glixon led a sweep in the 55m Hurdles in a time of 9.85. She followed that up by winning the High Jump with a leap of 4'8". After focusing on the 300m last winter, Lily Sheth took her first crack at the 600m and did not disappoint. Sheth blew away the field by over five seconds running a Division 1 qualifying time of 1:43.85 along the way. Chrisondra Awomah also led another Lexington sweep, this time in the Shot Put. She laid down a Division 1 qualifying throw of 35'4" to win the event.
On the boys side The Minutemen took care of business early. After the first three events were completed the score already stood at 23-4 and the boys were able to cruise to victory from there on out by a score of 84-16. Along the way The Minutemen were led by strong performances from their three captains. Alex Hiser won the 55m Dash in a time of 6.90, then came back to win the Long Jump with a Division 1 qualifying leap of 20'2.5". Eli Gappelberg led a Lexington sweep in the Mile, winning the race in a time of 4:34.84. Finally, Kazu Uda-Thach showed that he is in fine form early in the season by breezing to a win and a Division 1 qualifying time of 36.75 in the 300m. In addition to the captains, junior Andrew McGovern had a big day of firsts. After placing second in his first High Jump competition (5'5"), McGovern led The Minutemen to a sweep in his first 1000m race with a time of 2:41.98, and anchored the 4x400m relay to victory in 3:39.30.
