RESULTS
BOSTON, MA - On Friday night, The Minutemen went up against their archrivals, the Tanners of Woburn. After sustaining their worst defeat in nearly a decade last year the girls were ready for some payback when they arrived to the BU Indoor Track. By the end 55m High Hurdles and Dash, Lexington's girls already held a commanding 16-2 lead and they were just getting started on what would end up being a 64-36 triumph over the Tanners. On the boys side, the meet featured the only two undefeated teams in the Middlesex League's Liberty Division with both teams boasting a 3-0 record entering the highly anticipated meet. Unlike the girls, the boys got down early on the straightaway by a score of 11-7. However, they came back with authority on the oval and in the throwing circle to trample the Tanners by a final score of 69-31. With the victory Lexington now controls their own destiny en route to securing the Liberty Division Regular Season crown.
Breakout sophomore Aleia Gisolfi-McCready led the way for the girls. She began her day by winning the Dash in a personal best time of 7.81 seconds. However, she would save her best performance for the event that has become her specialty - after running it three times - the 300m. From the gun, Gisolfi-McCready blasted away from the field winning the race in 41.36 seconds. That time is the third fastest run by any Baystater this season and is the seventh best time by a sophomore in the US. Along with Gisolfi-McCready's impressive day, junior Lily Sheth put together a fantastic double of her own. She began her day by winning the 600m in a personal best time of 1:42.24, then less than 30 minutes later she was back to pick up a second place finish in the 300m (44.49 seconds). Another highlight for the Lexington girls came from a pair of Shot Put throwing sisters. As she has done in every meet this season, junior Chrisondra Awomah won the event (35'8.5"). However, in this meet her younger sister Beryl - a freshman - was able to pick up third place for The Minutemen, throwing a personal best 30'1". After many stellar performances by the girls, the Middlesex League's top distance runner, junior Danna Ofek toed the line for the 2 Mile with the opportunity to seal the victory for The Minutemen. After patiently sitting behind Woburn's Maura Doherty for the majority of the race, Ofek simply ran away from her in the final 800m of the race, taking the tape in a personal best time of 11:40.27.
As has been the case for the boys all season, their senior captains helped led the way. In this meet it was Kazu Uda-Thach and Eli Gappelberg who did the most damage. First Gappelberg outlasted Woburn senior Anshel Isles to take the Mile in 4:31.49; then it was Uda-Thach's turn. He first picked up second place in the Long Jump with a leap of 19'8", but he too saved his best for the 300m. Uda-Thach took off from the field to win the race in the second fastest time run in Massachusetts this season (35.74 seconds). Gappelberg would take to the track one final time to breeze to a second place finish in the 2 Mile with a time of 10:14.72. However the momentum of the meet truly turned during the 600m. Junior Andrew McGovern lead the way for The Minutemen, winning the race in a personal best and MA #5 time of 1:23.71. Fellow junior Josh Backert made his season debut in the event in fine style by taking second place in a Division 1 Championship qualifying time of 1:26.27. But it was senior Joe Tibbles who dropped the hammer on Woburn by gritting through the final lap and walking down two Tanners in the final 100 meters to complete the sweep of the event. The team of Tibbles, Backert, and McGovern were later joined by Josh's twin brother Selvin to put a final blue and gold stamp on the victory by blowing away the field in the 4x400m in a season best and Division 1 qualifying time of 3:30.94.
