On back-to-back days this week senior captain Janna Lee and junior Michael Gupta competed at the Massachusetts and New England Weight Throw Championships. On Wednesday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston Lee (39'6") and Gupta (61'10.5") took home the Girls 20lb. Weight Throw and Boys 25lb. Weight Throw titles respectively with throws that were just shy of their own personal bests. However, they saved their best for the following day at New Englands in Providence.

With Rhode Island being one of the four states in the country that regularly competes in the Weight Throw, including at their state meet, Lexington's throwers were facing their toughest competition of the year. Despite the strong fields both Lee and Gupta responded with lifetime best performances. In the Girls 20lb. Weight Throw Lee finished 19th with a personal best throw of 41'0.5". On the boys side Gupta unleashed his first throw of the competition a personal best distance of 63'4", which ended up placing him seventh overall in a talented field. Along with the place, Gupta now sits at US #29 on the Weight Throw list.

What is truly impressive about what these two athletes achieved this week, and to this point in the indoor season is that neither of them had ever picked up the Weight until about 13 months ago. With the event not regularly competed in Massachusetts, Lexington High School had previously never had athletes who threw the Weight. However, with the arrival of assistant coach James Hall - who had been a Weight and Hammer Throw specialist during his career at Northeastern University - to the LHS indoor coaching staff last winter, the opportunity presented itself to any member of the team willing to put in the extra work to learn the very difficult event. In a little over one year's time of staying extra hours after practice to work on technique, shoveling the outdoor throwing circle after a snowstorm so they could practice, and constantly showing up on days when the rest of the team did not have practice these two athletes have turned themselves not just into top tier Weight Throwers, but helped to establish The Minutemen as Massachusetts' preeminent power in the event.
