RESULTS
WOBURN, MA - For the first time in the nearly 50 year history of the Middlesex League Championships, the race organizers were able to lengthen the traditional 2.5 mile course and make it a standard 5k. As they have done all season, the Girls were rose to the occasion and won a decisive victory by scoring 43 points to second place Winchester's 72. On the Boys side it was the third time that The Minutemen squared off with Arlington. After splitting their first two meetings at Arlington and the Baystate Invitational, The Minutemen could not compete with Arlington's best performance of the year. The final score had Arlington taking the title with 47 points to The Minutemen's 52.
Highlights from the Varsity Race
In the Girls race, star junior Danna Ofek further validated her strong regular season by cruising to the individual title in a new personal best time of 19:00.80, winning the race by over 15 seconds. Following Ofek was The Minutemen's one-two punch of junior Pauline Steines (19:18.20) and senior captain Kesinia Sortor (19:18.30) who placed third and fourth respectively with personal bests of their own. Sophomore Lina Jafaar turned in another personal best (20:03.60) for The Minutemen finishing 15th in the process. Sophomore Anna Nelson sealed the victory for The Minutemen by finishing 20th overall in a time of 20:32.70.

In the Boys race it was a three-peat for Arlington's All-American Ryan Oosting. Running the fastest 5k time run in Massachusetts this year (14:52.50), Oosting took home the individual title for the third straight year while leading his team to their first team title during his career. For The Minutemen it was star sophomore Nick Porter who lead the way, running a big personal best time of 15:35.50 and placing third overall. He was followed by senior captain Eli Gappelberg who placed fourth with a personal best of his own (15:50.10). With a strong kick bringing him down the home stretch, junior Selvin Backert finished 12th in 16;23.70. Fellow junior Matt McAlarney was 14th in 16:29.00. Rounding out The Minutemen's top five was another junior, Adam Bernstein, who crossed the line in 16:40.20 finishing 19th in the process.

Highlights from the JV Race
The Girls had four runners place in the top ten. Sophomore Lauren Sterne placed second overall in a time of 20:51.30. Junior Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas was fifth in 21:26.10. Sophomore Summer Spencer was sixth in 21:33.00. Fellow Sophomore Aylin Bruce was tenth overall with a time of 22:01.20.
In the Boys race The Minutemen were able to take the top six places, and eight of the top ten. Senior captain Lucas DiCerbo finished his Middlesex League career by winning the race in 16:55.50. Junior Seth Cutler finished runner-up in 16:56.30. Sophomores Maxim Slobodchikov and Max DiCerbo were neck and neck for the entire length of the straightaway, but it was Slobodchikov who would edge out his teammate by one-tenth of a second. The two finished third and fourth respectively in 17:00.80 and 17:00.90. Junior Jack Stevens was fifth in 17:29.10. Fellow junior JJ Liu ran a personal best 17:33.10 and finished sixth. Simon Martarello was ninth in 17:40.20. Sophomore Sam Greenberg placed tenth in 17:45.10.
Highlights from the Freshmen Race
This year the Freshmen Race was competed on a 3k course with both Boys and Girls racing together, and a team title being awarded to the team with the lowest combined score between both genders. The Minutemen won that title convincingly by scoring 51 points (22 for the Boys; 29 for the Girls) to Arlington's 133. Evan Eberle (9:56.50) took the individual title for the Boys, out-kicking Arlington's Justing Eastmen. For the Girls, Melrose's Charlotte Tysail won the race in an impressive time of 11:07.80. Lexington's top runner was Clara Fu who took second overall in a time of 11:57.50.
Up Next
The Minutemen will now have nearly a two week layoff before they head down to the Wrentham Developmental Park to compete at the MIAA Eastern Massachusetts Divisional Championships. The Boys Division 1 race - on Saturday November 10th - will be the 7th of 12 races on the day, and is scheduled to start at 12:55pm. The Girls will be in the 10th race on the afternoon, starting at 2:25pm.
