GREENSBORO, NC - This past weekend a select group of six boys and one girl competed for The Minutemen at Nationals. For seniors Cameron Hofland, Lucas Honohan, and Thomas Lingard this was their final time racing for The Minutemen, and they certainly put on a show. On Saturday afternoon, in nearly 90 degree heat, the three seniors, along with standout junior Kazu Uda-Thach competed in the 1600 meter Sprint Medley Relay. The race involves the first two legs to split one lap around the track, each running 200 meters, the third leg running 400 meters, and the anchor finishes it off with an 800 meter run. After a blazing start by Uda-Thach and Hofland that had The Minutmen in second place going into 400 meter leg. Honohan then took the baton and with what has become a patented finishing kick this championship season he gaped the field, running an unofficial split of 48.7 seconds, and handed off to Lingard with a sizable lead. Lingard held that lead going into the final 200 meters when Issac Alderfer of Broadway Track Club in Virginia charged into the lead. As the runners came down the homestretch, Lingard gathered himself and found another gear. He passed the Alderfer in the final meters and took the heat in a new school record time of 3:28.11. The Minutemen took their heat but had to sit and watch while the eight teams in seeded section had their say in the final results. When the dust had finally settled Anthony DeKraker of Spirit of Pre took the title home to Michigan, and The Minutemen's time earned them the bronze medal. In addition, it was the sixth fastest time run anywhere in the United States this year, and it was an improvement on the team's fourth place finish in the event at New Balance Indoor Nationals in March. All together it is safe to say that these four young men have been the backbone of The Minutemen's success all season, and this past weekend it all came together in performance that no other group from Lexington has ever matched. For that they can walk away from this season, and for the three seniors their Lexington High School careers, as a group that put it all on the line in the biggest race of the year and walked away as All-Americans.
