EAST GREENWICH, RI - The Minutemen made their annual trip across state lines to Rhode Island Saturday to compete at the 13th Annual Ocean State Invitational. Competing against schools from Alabama, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and the host state the meet offered every athlete on The Minutemen's roster to see how they stacked up against a talented and diverse field.
Highlights from the Freshmen Races:
After being the best freshmen girls team last weekend at Highland Park's 1.5 mile course, LHS's ninth graders followed it up with an even better performance Saturday on a 4k course. The quartet of Kayla Gordon (16:56.43), Serena Caira (17:05.39), Chole Pacheco-Block (17:14.77), and Julia Littlewood (17:21.65) all scored in the top ten of the team competition. Locking down the 'W' for The Minutemen was Ashley Taylor, whose time of 18:33.28 placed her 16th overall. LHS ended up scoring 36 points, edging out the freshmen from Guilderland (NY) who scored 45 points.
In the boys race, The Minutemen also landed on the podium by placing third with 86 points; Newtown South and North Kingstown (RI) scored to 69 and 84 points respectively to take the top two spots. Antonio Lopez was LHS's first runner across the line, he finished 10th in 14:31.10. Next across the line was Andrew Hine (14:44.70), followed by Aidan McPhee (14:49.42) and Ian Miller (14:50.99). The Minutemen's final scorer was Kyle Taylor who placed 26th in team scoring in a time of 15:03.74.
Highlights from the JV Races:
While Saratoga Springs (NY) dominated the JV race with a nearly perfect 16 point total, Lexington's ladies managed a ninth place finish. Camelia Atassi was The Lady Minutemen's first runner across the line in a time of 22:42.65. Junior Izzy Jakimczyk was next in 23:20.78. Crossing the line in 57th overall was sophomore Casey Weisburg (23:37.23). Emma Reddy was LHS's fifth runner; her time of 24:17.46 was enough for 73rd overall.
Due to a near record amount of entries to the 2019 field, the boys JV race was broken up into two races. In the seeded JV race, which was scored, North Kingstown (RI) and Mountain Brook (AL) took the top two spots; while The Minutemen finished third with 64 points. However, should sophomore Thomas Lane (17:31.96), who dominated the overflow race with the best overall JV time of the day been running with LHS's top JV athletes The Minutemen would have cruised to victory. The top five LHS runners in the seeded JV race included sophomore Noah Quadri (17:50.85) who finished third, Reed Solomon (18:07.28) who was sixth, Josh Backert (18:22.95) finishing 16th, as well as Justin Liu (18:27.78) and Jerry Xia (18:28.43) who placed back-to-back scoring 19 and 20 points respectively.
Highlights from the Varsity Races:
After dominating the JV race at Highland Park, the girls "B-Team" made the decision to race against the varsity teams at Ocean State. The girls raced tough and finished 15th out of the 26 teams in the race. Leading the way for The Lady Minutemen was junior Lauren Sterne who was 38th overall in 21:18.21. Senior captain Summer Spencer followed up her strong race last weekend by finishing 53rd in 21:33.27. Next across the line was sophomore Clara Fu (21:54.17); her time placed 69th. Senior captain Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas ran 22:35.15 to finish 93rd overall. Junior Lorelei Marcell (22:49.12) just edged out fellow classmate Aylin Bruce (22:49.38) to nail down LHS's final scoring spot; the two placed 101st and 102nd respectively. Sophomore Ipek Kendircioglu was 109th in 22:58.76.
The varsity boys from Hopkinton took the victory with 212 points, while The Minutemen's "B-Team" ended up in sixth place overall by scoring 265 points. Senior captain Selvin Backert led the way for Lexington. His time of 17:04.73 placed him 21st overall. Following Backert in 39th place was sophomore Evan Eberle (17:20.85). Next across the line was junior Maxim Slobodchikov (17:27.29); he placed 45th. Senior Jack Stevens dipped under 18 minutes by finishing 79th in 17:55.95. The Minutemen's fifth man was sophomore Traver Smith III who ran a PR of 17:56.75 to place 81st. Fellow classmate Nick Lam (17:58.01) and senior Anthony Mabardy (18:20.79) were 83rd and 106th respectively.
Highlights from the Championship Races:
When the dust had settled from the Girls Championship Race, The Lady Minutemen were without their top two runners. Despite a depleted squad, strong performances were turned in by the rest of the group as they finished 12th as a team. Freshman Mirra Payson dipped under the 20 minute barrier for the first time in her young high school career. Crossing the line in 19:59.17, the breakout freshman finished 31st overall. Senior captain Pauline Steines had a bounce back performance after a tough race on Tuesday; she finished in 20:09.97, 36th overall. After winning the JV race last week, Maude Hajjaj got the call up to the top team this week. The senior harrier made the most of her opportunity running a PR 20:52.58, finishing 59th in the field. Junior Anna Nelson continued to come on strong after an early season injury by finishing 67th overall in 21:01.10. LHS's fifth runner was sophomore Juila Lennon-Newell (21:22.38), who used a furious kick to run a PR of her own and finish 74th. Zoe Gu was The Lady Minutemen's final finisher, crossing the line in 23:02.10.
Coming in as the defending champions, the boys came into the Championship Race with high expectations and ready to defend their crown. Unfortunately they ran into a buzz-saw in the form of Conard (CT). The had was led by Gavin Sherry who won in 15:30.09 - less than 1 second off the course record - and Tyler Remigino who was second in 15:56.14. The team placed another runner in the top five on their way to 42 total points and the win. The Minutemen relied once again on their depth and their captains to finish runner up with 90 points. One of those captains, senior Micah Benson placed 8th in team scoring with a PR 16:29.95. He was followed by his fellow captains Matt McAlarney (16:38.86), Adam Bernstein (16:41.08), and Max DiCerbo (16:53.84); the trio scored 12, 14, and 22 points respectively. Continuing his breakout season was sophomore Graham Bracken. The Minutemen's young harrier placed 34th - 41st overall - in team scoring with a time of 17:13.05. Along with the top five, sophomore Daniel Ramsey was 51st overall in 17:32.46. Senior Seth Cutler was 70th in 18:13.70. With the 2nd overall finish by the boys and girls squad turning in a 12th place finish, The Minutemen were awarded the overall team title with the best combined finish of any school in the Championship Race.
