LEXINGTON, MA - No masks, no restrictions, just a glorious early Spring afternoon was waiting for The Minutemen and the Spy Ponders as the two teams opened up the Middlesex League Season on Tuesday afternoon. LHS easily dispatched Arlington with the Boys winning by a score of 95.5 to 40.5, and the Girls putting up 87 points to Arlington's 49. However, the real story on the day was sophomore sensation Quin Tandeih. In her final meet last year, Tandeih put Massachusetts on notice by placing fourth at the All-State Championships with a throw of 113'11". That throw was just one-inch shy of Kathy Yang's (LHS '98) School Record from her senior year. Tuesday, on her second throw of the meet against Arlington, Tandeih unleashed a throw that landed 114'5" and carved her name into the record book. Along with Tandeih's big day, senior captain Raquel Batista-Vieira ripped off a big PR of her own in the Discus. Her very first throw of the season flew 100'4", which was a new PR and made her only the second LHS thrower to break the 100-foot mark in recent memory. With this dynamic duo opening up the season in such a strong form, it will be fascinating to watch how far they can go as the season progresses.
Along with Tandeih's and Batista-Vieira's big days, the Lex Girls had a number of strong performances. Senior captain Elena Sabin opened things up on the oval for the Girls with a Division 1 Championship qualifying time of 1:09.5h in the 400m Intermediate Hurdles. Not to be outdone, senior captain Mari McBride showed that she is still in fine form after a tremendous Indoor Season in the High Jump. She debuted in the event with a leap of 5'4". That mark achieved the MIAA SuperMax standard, and automatically qualifies her for the Meet of Champions in June. Along with her great day on the apron, she turned in a Divisional qualifying time of 59.9h in the 400m Dash. Junior captain Ava Criniti (11:39.7h) cruised her way through the 2 Mile with a Divisional qualifying time of her own.
LHS's junior class led the way for The Minutemen in the Boys meet. Captain Michael Gerfen and fellow classmate Jayden Bai got things off to a hot start in the 110m High Hurdles as both turned in PRs and Divisional qualifying times of 15.2h and 15.4h respectively. Next up, Brandon Uda-Thach debuted in the 400m Dash with a Divisional qualifying time of 50.8h, just edging out senior captain Josh Lee (51.1h) who also qualified for Divisionals. In the Shot Put circle, LHS's "Bomb Squad" was well represented by junior Jack Ngo who set a new PR, tossing the 12-pound metal ball 49'11" to achieve the SuperMax standard. He was followed up by the strong debut of Allen Jiang, who's throw of 45'0" qualified him for the Middlesex League Championships.
