Meet Information
MIAA Division 1 Championships
May 29, 2022
Shrewsbury High School - Shrewsbury, MA
RESULTS
SHREWSBURY, MA - Saturday afternoon The Minutemen were back at Shrewsbury High School for Day 2 of the MIAA Division 1 Championships. The MIAA's realignment of the Divisions in Massachusetts meant that this year's edition of the Divisional Championships put LHS up against the biggest school across the Bay State. That realignment resulted in one of the most talent rich fields in recent memory. Clearly the competition brought out the best in The Minutemen as both the Boys and Girls teams had top-10 finishes for the first time in recent memory. The Boys finished fourth overall with 50 points - Newton North won with 107.5 - while the Girls Team's 49 points landed them sixth, with the Newton North Girls taking the title with 75.5 points.
As they have been all year, the Lex Girls were led by the stellar performance of superstar senior Mari McBride. LHS's senior captain began her day by earning the silver medal in the High Jump after clearing the bar at 5'4". She then came back to match that effort, this time with a huge PR of 57.21 to place second in the 400m Dash. But McBride saved her best for last, as she anchored the 4x400m of fellow classmate and captain Elena Sabin, and sophomores Adia Singh and Maya Dubrovsky with an unofficial split of 56.7 seconds. The team's time of 4:03.42 was a season best and earned the quartet the bronze medal. In addition to McBride's big day, sophomore Katie Atkins - who placed seventh in the Pole Vault on Friday - turned in a lifetime best performance in the Javelin. Her farthest throw of the steel tipped spear flew 94'6" to earn herself another seventh place medal.
On the Boys side, The Minutemen saved their best for last as the 4x400m Relay of senior captain Josh Lee, and juniors Jayden Bai, Alexios Kontothanassis and Branndon Uda-Thach got a rematch from Division 1 Relays that they wanted against the boys from Newton North. Lee led things off with an unofficial PR split of 49.9 seconds to give LHS the early lead. Bai and Kontothanassis followed up with splits of 51.6 and 52.0 respectively. As the baton passed to the anchor legs, Newton North's anchor Quincy Scott - who beat Uda-Thach and Lee in the 400m - held a narrow lead for the Tigers over The Minutemen. Uda-Thach cruised through the first 200m before making his move around the final turn. He pulled even with Scott at the top of the homestretch and the race was on for the next 100m. Uda-Thach battled his way past Scott, and with an unofficial 48.3 split earned his team the victory by two-tenths of a second. The Minutemen's time of 3:21.87 was MA #2. As they have done all season, LHS's "Bomb Squad" came up big in the throws. After a fourth place finish and a PR in the Discus on Thursday, junior Allen Jiang threw an outdoor PR of 48'9.5" in the Shot Put to place sixth overall. His throw was bested by teammate Jack Ngo, who's top throw of 48'10" placed him fifth.
