A NATIONAL QUALIFIER AND REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS HIGHLIGHTS D1 RELAYS

Meet Information
MSTCA Division 1 Relays
April 30, 2022
Braintree High School - Braintree, MA
RESULTS
BRAINTREE, MA - Last year Division 1 Relays was the first invitational since the pandemic hit in the winter of 2020. The Minutemen faced temps in the 40s, and a mix of rain, sleet, snow and driving wind at Peabody High School. Fast-forward a year, and it was a completely different setting. The weather at Braintree High School was perfect, and allowed for a number of all-time performances for The Minutemen. In the team scoring, LHS finished sixth overall on the Boys side, scoring 30 points. Saint John's Prep would win the title with 69 points. The Lex Girls followed up their victory from last year with a solid performance to finish fourth overall, scoring 40 points. Newtown North took the team championships with 69 points of their own.
In recent years, both Indoor and Outdoor Relay Meets have turned into Record Day for The Minutemen. Since Coach Hall took over the throws program in the Spring of 2017, both Indoor Shot Put Relays have fallen, and the Girls Outdoor Shot Put Relay record was broken as well. Saturday, LHS's "Bomb Squad" took down three more records down. The Girls Javelin squad of junior Karin "Cannon" Minemoto (98'5"), sophomore Katie Atkins (92'10"), and junior Annie Smith (88'11") had three of the top six performances at the meet and combined to not only win the event but take down a record that has stood since 2001. After the Girls were done, junior captain Jack Ngo (42'8.25"), and fellow classmates Kaden Cassidy (45'1") and Allen Jiang (43'6.50") finally took down the elusive Shot Put Relay record that had stood since 2009. That same trio came back in the Discus Relay to place second overall with a combined distance of 370'1". Their mark bested the record set all the way back in 1996. Along with the records in the field, the Boys 4x400m Relay of senior captain Josh Lee, and juniors Jayden Bai, Alexios Kontothanassis and Brandon Uda-Thach turned in the fastest time by an LHS 4x4 since Andrew McGovern (LHS '20), Joshua Backert (LHS '20), Thomas Lingard (LHS '18) and Lucas Honohan (LHS '18) set the Outdoor record to win the 2018 All-State Championship. Lee, Bai, Kontothanassis, and Uda-Thach's time of 3:23.91 was enough to earn the silver medal and qualify for the National Championships in June.
