A PAIR OF ALL-STATE PERFORMANCES HIGHLIGHT DAY 1 OF THE MEET OF CHAMPIONS
Meet Information
MIAA Meet of Champions
June 2, 2022
Alumni Field - Westfield, MA
RESULTS
WESTFIELD, MA - The Minutemen traveled to the Campus of Westfield State University on Thursday for Day 1 of the newly branded and formatted MIAA Meet of Champions. Mirroring the new format of last week's Divisional Championships, the meet is broken up into two days. However, unlike previous years and the Divisional Championships, this meet is not scored and therefore no State Championship team is crowned. Despite the curious decision making process, the fact remained that on Thursday the best the Bay State has to offer descended upon the 400m oval around Alumni Field to make it known who was the class of the Commonwealth.
LHS saw a handful of strong performances at the first day of competition, but none stood taller than that of junior Jayden Bai in the 400m Intermediate Hurdles. The Middlesex League Champion, and MA #4 athlete in the event had a rough go of it at Divisionals where he finished a disappointing third with a time of 58.73. Seeded 13th coming into the meet, Bai charged to the lead in the unseeded section and won going away with a time of 57.14. That time held up through the seeded section to earn him the bronze medal in the event, and a trip to the New England Championships. Along with Bai's big day, fellow classmate Ava Criniti was able to grind her way through a challenging 2 Mile to earn sixth place with a time of 11:08.25. With that performance, Criniti advanced herself to New Englands, where she will have the chance to make a run at Danna Ofek's (LHS '20) 3200m record of 11:03.01 from the 2019 Championships.
