SCHOOL RECORDS AND NATIONAL QUALIFIERS HIGHLIGHT A STELLAR NEW YORK RELAYS
Meet Information
18th Annual New York Relays
April 22-23, 2022
Icahn Stadium - New York, NY
RESULTS
NEW YORK, NY - This past weekend a select group of Lexington High School student-athletes traveled to legendary Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island in New York for the New York Relays. As was the case during the Indoor Season, the Empire State brought out the best The Minutemen had to offer. After two days of competition The Minutemen turned in 13 season or personal bests, including 3 national qualifying marks, and 2 LHS records.
Things got off to an incredible start for The Minutemen on Friday night, as the team's one-two punch of senior captains Evan Eberle and Ollie DiCerbo toed the line for the 2000m Steeplechase. The event, which the MSTCA and MIAA do not compete, and LHS does not have the facilities for, includes four 36-inch barriers and one water jump on each of the five laps of the race. For Eberle, this was his only the second time he had competed in the event, and the first since his freshman season. DiCerbo on the hand was in the race for the first time. Both athletes came in with the goal of running the National Championship standard of 6:25.00, and trying to break Ben Martell's (LHS '15) school record of 6:22.80. Missioned accomplished, as Eberle smashed the record by running a US #8 time of 6:13.84 to place second overall, while DiCerbo placed fourth with a time of 6:22.57, landing himself at US #17. In the field, senior captain Mari McBride and sophomore Katie Atkins had stellar performances of their own. Atkins, who trains at Patriot Pole Vault Club in Westborough because LHS does not have Pole Vaulting facilities, came into the meet having established the LHS record in the Indoor Pole Vault this past winter. She was hoping to take down another record held by the LHS Class of 1998 (Kate Waller's vault of 8'0"), after fellow classmate Quin Tandeih broke Kathy Yang's Discus record earlier this season. Atkins did just that, matching her mark of 8'6" from Indoors. On the High Jump apron, McBride was at her absolute best on Saturday morning. Coming in with a lifetime best of 5'5", McBride became the first LHS jumper since Lucile Cancre (LHS '09) to clear to bar at 5'6". That new PR not only won the meet, but was the best jump by any Massachusetts athlete so far this season, and qualified her for the Nike Outdoor Nationals at Historic Hayward Field.

The Minutemen are back in action this Tuesday with bragging rights on the line as they will host the Reading Rockets. On the Boys side, Reading comes into this Outdoor Season as the defending Outdoor Track & Field Middlesex League Championships having bested The Minutemen by 7.5 points last year. Indoors the teams fought to a draw in their dual meet before LHS demolished them by 61 points for the League Championship in February. The next installment of this heated rivalry will begin Tuesday, April 26th at 4pm at the Lexington Center Track.
