RESULTS
LEXINGTON, MA - Tuesday on a classic 50 degree, rain-soaked April afternoon, The Minutemen welcomed the Reading Rockets to the Lexington Center Recreation Complex for the latest installment of this heated rivalry. On the Boys side, the these two teams have combined to win the last three Middlesex League Championships. Reading bested LHS in the 2021 winter and spring seasons, while The Minutemen got their revenge this past winter. With all of this background, Tuesday's meet had all of the makings of a classic dual. After four long hours of back and forth competition, the Rockets ended up besting The Minutemen by a score of 71.5-64.5. While the Boys fell short, the Lex Girls continued their run of success against the Rockets as they won for the seventh consecutive time by a score of 85-42.
The Boys meet began on the track, with the first highlight of the day for LHS coming from junior Aidan McPhee who ran a huge PR in the Mile (4:51.4h) to earn a big third place finish that at the time tied the meet up at nine points each. After McPhee, it was perhaps the gutsiest performance since Annie O'Brien's 1000/800 double on a broken leg. Junior captain Michael Gerfen broke his wrist in practice a few weeks ago, but was cleared to race the 110m High Hurdles against Reading. He loaded into the blocks with a hard plaster cast wrapped in a plastic shopping bag - to keep dry in the rain - protecting that wrist. And although the official did not give a fair start to the field, Gerfen recovered from a slip and ran his heart out to place third with a time of 15.5h seconds. In the 800m, it took a 1:59.0h from Reading's Jack Quinn to best Lexington's freshman phenom Max Zhang who turned in another big race by running a PR of 2:02.7h. After running into Reading's superstar Michael Harden in both the 110m Hurdles and the 200m Dash, junior Jayden Bai - having already PRed with a 15.1h and 22.1h in those events - was all alone on the High Jump apron as The Minutemen's last hope to pull off a victory with against three of the best jumpers in the League. In his first High Jump competition since mid-February Bai cleared 5'8" on his second jump, but it was not enough as he would lose out on jumps and finish in a tie for third place as the Rockets sealed the victory.
On the Girls side, the junior class showed up time and time again for The Minutemen. after debuting in the 2000m Steeplechase last weekend Uma Sanker dropped down to the 400m Intermediate Hurdles against Reading. The junior showed very well running 1:13.7h to place second. Fellow classmate Karin Minemoto took the win in the Javelin with a throw of 93'3". The 11th grade trio of captain Ava Criniti (5:15.1h), Mirra Payson (5:32.40), and Jasmine Sun (5:46.0h) broke out the golden broom to sweep the Mile. Another great run was turned in by sophomore Maya Dubrovsky in the 400m. She turned in a huge PR of 1:02.8h to qualify for the Middlesex League Championships.
