LEXINGTON, MA - The Minutemen returned home for the final time in the 2022 Outdoor Season on Tuesday, as they welcomed the Winchester Red and Black. While neither teams put much emphasis on scoring points in dual meets, the Middlesex League rules say the meets are scored and so the Lex Girls scored 101 to Winchester's 34 points. The Boys won by a score of 87-49. The real story on the day was the tremendous individual performances by a number of LHS student-athletes.
The Lex Girls were led by the stellar run of junior captain Ava Criniti in the 2 Mile. Taking the race from the gun, Criniti went wire-to-wire to win by nearly two minutes with a new PR of 11:12.4h. That time was the second fastest run so far this season in Massachusetts. Another member of the Distance Squad, junior Uma Sanker dropped down to the 800m for the first time this year and did so in style. Sanker came through the 400 in a brisk 70 seconds and then continued to pour it on over the final lap. The junior harrier crossed the line in a new PR of 2:24.9h to win the race. Senior captain Mari McBride ran a League qualifying time of 26.6h seconds for 200m to win the event. Fellow classmate Anna Yang turned in a season best 16'4" to qualify for League as well.
On the Boys side, the 110m High Hurdle group is rapidly becoming one of the best squads in Massachusetts. This past Saturday the team had won the Shuttle Hurdles Relay at the Division 1 Relay Meet only to receive a controversial disqualification, which was deemed unappealable by the meet director. Tuesday, junior captain Michael Gerfen, and fellow classmates Jayden Bai and Naresh Vytheswaran showed exactly what they are capable of. Gerfen turned in a PR and Divisional qualifying time of 15.1h seconds, Bai (15.4h) ran just off his PR but still was well under the D1 qualifying mark, and Vytheswaran in only his fourth 110m Hurdle race ran a huge PR of 16.3h seconds to achieve the League Championship standard. Along with the Hurdle crew, the dynamic sprinting duo of junior Brandon Uda-Thach and senior captain Josh Lee had themselves a day. Lee qualified for Divisionals with a time of 11.1h seconds in the 100m Dash, before doubling back to run another D1 qualifying time of 22.6h seconds in the 200m Dash. Both of Lee's performances were personal bests. After his electric 49.2 split on the 4x400m Relay this past weekend, Uda-Thach turned in another PR on Tuesday, running 22.2h seconds in the 200m. The final Divisional qualifying mark for the Boys came from junior Kaden Cassidy who's throw of 131'3" bested his previous PR by nearly 10 feet.
