THE MINUTEMEN AND THE TANNERS SQUARE OFF IN WOBURN
Meet Information
Woburn Dual Meet
April 12, 2022
Woburn High School - Woburn, MA
RESULTS
WOBURN, MA - A reshuffling of the Liberty Divisional schedule this Spring combined with a little bit of New England weather meant that Lexington and Woburn were squaring off in mid-April, and for the Tanners, LHS was their first meet of the season. Despite not including the same build up and drama of previous years, the two teams brought out the best in each other. After over four hours of competition, The Minutemen had won the boys meet by a score of 84-51, while on the Girls side the Tanners extended their dual meet winning streak to 27 straight, winning by a score of 80-56.
The Lex Girls turned in a number of strong performances throughout the meet, but perhaps the best event of the day for The Minutemen was the 2 Mile. Coming off a successful winter of competing in the biathlon, junior Mirra Payson showed she is returning fine form on the track by winning the race in a new PR of 12:06.0h. Along with the win, that time qualified Payson for the Middlesex League Championships. Payson was followed by fellow junior Uma Sanker, who turned in a League qualifying time of 12:12.0h. Dropping down from her signature event, the 400m, senior captain Mari McBride ran 12.9h for the 100m Dash. That made her the first Lex Girl since 2018 to break 13-seconds for 100m. She then doubled back in the very next event in the schedule to run a season best 59.3h for 400m. The Javelin saw the varsity trio of Karin Minemoto (90'0"), Katie Atkins (89'1"), and Rose O'Neil (71'7") all turn in season best marks.
Perhaps the highlight of the meet on the Boys side, was junior Jack Ngo's throw in the Discus. Having thrown 130'0" last week, the captain of LHS's "Bomb Squad" ripped off a big personal best of 136'7" to qualify for the Divisional Championships. Along with Ngo, junior Jayden Bai's impressive debut in the 400m Intermediate Hurdles highlighted action on the oval for The Minutemen. Bai, a sprinter and high hurdler, moved up in distance and down in hurdle height for the first time against Woburn. He cruised his way around the track, seemingly getting stronger as the race went on and broke the tape in 59.9h seconds to win the race and qualify for the Middlesex League Championships. Finishing just behind him was fellow classmate Alexios Kontothanassis, who's time of 1:00.8h was just off his PR but still enough for a League Championship qualifying mark of his own. Along with the intermediate hurdlers, the 800m provided plenty of drama as four members of the LHS squad turned in League qualifying times in the event. Led by senior captain Ollie DiCerbo (2:03.0h), freshman Max Zhang (2:03.7h), senior Graham Bracken (2:05.0h), and senior Nick Lam (2:05.7h) all ran open PRs in the event.
