THE MINUTEMEN CAPPED OFF TWO UNDEFEATED SEASONS ON SENIOR NIGHT
Meet Information
Belmont Dual Meet
May 11, 2023
Belmont High School - Belmont, MA
RESULTS
BELMONT, MA - The Minutemen traveled to Belmont Thursday afternoon to face off against the Marauders. This meet - Senior Day for LHS - was originally scheduled to be held in Lexington, but due to the still unresolved saga the Town is putting the Lexington Public Schools through in order to install a Discus Cage that will create a safe space for student-athletes for competition, the meet, and the sendoff for the Class of 2023 was hosted at Belmont. Despite the change of venue, The Minutemen finished off their most successful Regular Season in recent memory, as both the Boys' and Girls' Teams came away undefeated in each of their five dual meets. LHS won the Boys' Meet by a score of 97-38, and the Girls' Meet 104-31.
The meet turned out to be a homecoming of sorts for the Bomb Squad, as they spend the majority of their time practicing at Belmont's facility. Unlike the Lexington's Center Recreation Complex, Belmont High School has everything they need to keep kids and the public safe during practice and meets. With all the comforts of "home" the Bomb Squad had their best meet of the season, as six boys turned in PRs in the Discus, with senior Kaden "The Sundance Kid" Cassidy unleashing a missile that flew an MA #2 distance of 159'8". However, that was only the second best performance Cassidy had on the day. The meet began with a Hammer Throw competition, and on his fifth attempt Cassidy let the 12lb implement fly 198'1". That mark broke the LHS Record in the event held by Michael Gupta (LHS '20) by nearly three feet. Along with Kassidy's efforts in the Hammer, senior Allen Jiang (191'5") and "The Captain" Jack Ngo (172'11") both hit the New Balance Outdoor Nationals standard. The trio now ranks US #8, US #12, and US #34 in the event. Back on the track, a number of LHS athletes had big performances in their final tune-ups before Championship Season. Junior Jacob Pan (15.85) ran over a half-second PR in the 110m Hurdles, making him the fourth LHS athlete to dip under the 16-second barrier in the event. No other school in MA has more than two. Pan also had a big day on the Triple Jump runway, he won the competition with a PR of 41'3". In the 100m Dash, freshman Andrew Gu dropped a big PR with a time of 11.64 seconds to win the race, while senior Miguel Jaramillo came through with a Middlesex League Championship qualifying time of 11.69 seconds in his final chance to make the mark.
In addition to all the success the Boys' "Burger Squad" is having this Season in the Hurdles, junior Amandine Mangon made her claim as the best 100m High Hurdlers LHS has ever seen on Thursday. Mangon broke quickly out of the blocks and charged over the first nine barriers, a slight trip on the 10th was the only blemish on an otherwise historic performance, as the junior broke the LHS Record in the event held by Colleen Shank (LHS '97) with a time of 15.25 seconds. That time has Mangon ranked MA #4 in the event. In the 800m, junior Adia Singh debuted in the event for the first time this year. Singh ran an impressive time of 2:23.05 to pickup second place in the event and qualify for the MIAA Division 1 Championships in the process. Qualifying for League in the 800m was senior Serena Caira, who came back from injury to run a PR of 2:29.44. In the sprints it was sophomore Laya Barghuthi and freshman Julianna Mathurin who had the breakout performances of the day. Barghuthi blazed her way to a PR and League qualifying time of 13.18 seconds in the 100m Dash, while Mathurin took her first run at the Varsity 200m Dash and hit the League standard with a time of 27.09 seconds.
