Weymouth High School - Weymouth, MA
RESULTS
WEYMOUTH, MA - In what was nothing short of a marathon meet - lasting nine hours in total - LHS's underclassmen had their chance to shine against the state's best ninth and tenth graders at the annual Freshmen/Sophomore Meet. While not a scored meet, it always offers teams a preview of how their program's will stack up at the all-state level in future years. For The Minutemen, the freshmen boys and girls burst onto the scene, and let the Bay State know that Lexington will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
On the Boys' side of the runway, it was freshman Amari Mow who turned in perhaps the best Long Jump series by an LHS athlete in over a decade. Mow had a couple jumps just over the 20-foot mark this season, but he showed up to Weymouth with something no other competitor had. Hang time. On his first attempt of the competition, Mow hit the board and floated through the air to a mark of 21'3.75". That mark was four inches clear of any other competitor during prelims or finals, and thus earned him gold in the event. But he was just getting started. The finals saw the freshman sensation turn in three consecutive jumps of over 21-feet, with each one drawing more and more eyes as he seemingly hung in the air forever after each time he exploded off the board. In the end, his best leap - 21'11" - fell just 1.50" shy of the meet record set in 2019. However, he will be back next year with every intention of re-writing the record books. For his efforts, Mow is now ranked MA #3 among all competitors in the Long Jump, and US #39 among freshmen. While Mow was lighting things up on the runways, it was freshman Simon Tandeih - the state's top ranked freshman 110m hurdler - who was loading into the blocks for his signature event. Incidental contact midway through his preliminary race left him in eighth headed into the two section final. That meant he would not be facing the fastest six athletes. That did not seem to bother Tandeih, as the freshman blasted out from the blocks in the finals and roared over the 10 hurdles before crossing the line in a stellar time of 15.91 seconds. That time would hold up to earn him the bronze medal in the event. Tandeih now ranks MA #17 in the event.
Representing LHS's Bomb Squad in both the Discus and Shot Put, freshman Ainsley Cuthbertson began her day with a nearly 5-foot PR in the Discus. Her best throw of 89'3" earned her fourth place in the event, and now ranks her MA #2 among freshmen in the event behind her teammate Ella Wolosoff. Cuthbertson was back later in the afternoon in the Shot Put. There she waited until her final throw of the competition to bring her best. Gliding across the circle, the ninth grader unleashed the 8-pound metal ball 32'1" for a new PR, and a fifth place finish. That throw now ranks her MA #1 among freshmen. On the Triple Jump runway, freshman Bruguers Sagues came into the meet with a PR of just under 32ft. She nearly matched that mark with her final jump of the prelims, and earned herself a spot in the finals as the seventh seed. Then, on her first attempt of the finals, Sagues exploded on the runway with a new PR of 33'2.50" to leap into third place. She would remain there and walk away from the competition with the bronze medal. Also turning in a pair of medal winning performances was freshman Felice Haverly. She began her day in the 200m Dash where she sprinted her way to fifth place with a time of 26.76 seconds. She then headed over to the High Jump apron where she cleared 4'10" to place fourth overall.

Due to still unresolved roadblocks imposed by the Town, which have halted installation of a Discus cage that is safe for competition on LHS grounds, despite it being approved by the Superintendent in February, Senior Day for the LHS Track & Field Team will no longer be hosted in Lexington. Thursday's Belmont Dual Meet will be held at Belmont High School. Belmont's coaches have graciously allowed for The Minutemen to celebrate its seniors at their facility while the Town of Lexington figures out its priorities. The meet will begin at 4pm on Thursday, May 11th.
