BANGOR, ME - After the MIAA Meet of Champions last week, The Minutemen had a total of 19 student-athletes who had qualified for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals. That number included senior captain Ava Criniti, who had qualified for the 5000m earlier this season. Saturday, Criniti, along with senior Uma Sanker, and juniors Samara McVey and Adia Singh traveled up to the New England Championships for a chance to punch their tickets to Nationals in the 4x800m Relay.
The quartet had earned the bronze medal last week at the Meet of Champions with a time of 9:32.49, but needed to dip under 9:29.00 in order to qualify for Nationals. Things got off to a strong start with Sanker carrying the baton to a 2:21.25 FAT split, and putting The Minutemen third behind E.O. Smith (CT) and Glastonbury (CT). Next up was McVey, who found the form that made her so successful at the Divisional Meet in May. The junior turned in a solid FAT split of 2:23.23 to keep her team in third before handing off the baton. From there Singh ran a great leg, that pulled her team up to second place with a PR split of 2:21.08. Criniti then got the baton and battled with E.O. Smith's Gabriella Hernandez every step of the way for the two laps around the track. In the end, Hernandez would get the better of Criniti. However, Criniti's FAT split of 2:18.09 earned The Minutemen the bronze medal. More importantly though, she crossed the line with a total time of 9:23.64 that not only qualified the team for Nationals, but also smashed the LHS Record set back at this very meet in 2001 by a team led by LHS distance royalty Natasha Roetter (LHS '02). The performance by the Lex Girls marks the 21st School Record that has been broken by the Indoor and Outdoor Teams this year.
