LHS'S "BURGER SQUAD" ETCHES THEIR NAME INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Meet Information
19th Annual New York Relays
April 21-22, 2023
Icahn Stadium - New York, NY
RESULTS
NEW YORK, NY - Over the weekend a select group of athletes headed down to represent The Minutemen at New York Relays. The two day meet featured some of the best prep talent from around the area, in one of the finest track & field environments in the Northeast, Icahn Stadium. All tolled, The Minutemen left the Empire State with 15 season or personal bests, 4 Middlesex League Championship Meet qualifying marks, 1 MIAA Division 1 qualifier, 7 qualifiers for the Meet of Champions, 1 Nationals qualifier, and the 110m Shuttle Hurdles Relay took down a record that has stood since 2010.
LHS's "Burger Squad" has become one of the finest hurdle groups in Massachusetts. Along with the two heavy hitters - senior captains Michael Gerfen and Jayden Bai, who both podiumed in the 55m Hurdles at the Indoor Meet of Champions - senior Naresh Vytheswaran, junior Jacob Pan, and freshman Simon Tandeih have been key depth pieces that propelled the team to breaking the long standing Indoor 50y Shuttle Hurdle Record, and establishing the 55m Shuttle Hurdle Record at Nationals. Sunday, it was Bai, Gerfen, Tandeih, and Vytheswaran who toed the line for the first 110m Shuttle Hurdle race of their season, and the boys did not disappoint. The group ran a stellar race to place second overall with a time of 1:02.51, which bested the previous school record by two full seconds. After their performance in New York, it is safe to say that this group is the best hurdle squad Lexington High School has ever seen. Along with the big day for the "Burger Squad," freshman Felice Haverly put on a show of her own. Haverly began her weekend running a personal best and Middlesex League Meet qualifying time of 13.23 in the 100m. She then returned on Saturday afternoon to post another PR, this time in the 200m. Haverly's time of 26.50 was enough to achieve the Divisionals standard. However, the ninth grader saved her best for last. She returned to Icahn Stadium on Sunday to compete in the High Jump. On the apron, she cleared 4'6", 4'8", and 4'10" all on her first attempts, which gave her the tie breaker over senior jumpers Payton Kochanski (Mount St. Mary Academy, NJ), and Clariss Duhaney (George H. Hewlett, NY) to win the event outright. The other victory from the weekend for The Minutemen came from senior Allen Jiang, who simply dominated the Shot Put. His first throw of 52'11" was a season best, and won the event for him by over four feet. Jiang would add two more throws over 50 feet during the later rounds, just for good measure, but he is seeming to pickup right where he left off after his historic Indoor Season.
Other Highlights for the Boys
Other Highlights for the Girls
The Minutemen will return Middlesex League action this Wednesday, April 26th. It is once again rivalry week, as LHS will travel to Reading to face off against the Rockets. On the Boys' side, this heated rivalry has produced some epic clashes over the years, and this year's meet will likely be no different. The meet is set to begin at 4:00pm.
