Winchester Dual Meet

Wakefield Memorial High School - Wakefield, MA
RESULTS
WAKEFIELD, MA - Due to Town imposed roadblocks, which have halted installation of LHS's new throwing cage on school property, The Minutemen had to move their scheduled home meet because the current discus cage is not safe for competition. Luckily, Wakefield was gracious enough to host LHS as they went up against the Red and Black of Winchester on Thursday. With "Track Day" - where LHS competes in two separate invitationals, at three locations on the same day - looming just two days away, a number of The Minutemen's best were either resting or moved into events outside of their usual spots. Despite all the changes, as they have done for years, the resilient student-athletes of Lexington overcame all of the obstacles thrown in their way to achieve success. The Girls' Team took the victory by a score off 83-53. While the Boys' Meet - as all great Track & Field Meets do - came down to the Relays. There The Minutemen took the win in both the 4x1 and 4x4 to seal a 72-64 victory of their own.
The Girls's Meet saw a number of strong performances, but none went as far as freshman sensation Aubrey Deardorf. The ninth grader came into the meet having competed in the Long Jump three times previously. The first time, she fouled out. The second time she jumped 15'8". Last time out she had a bit of a breakthrough, and turned in a leap of 16'3.25", which was the farthest jump by an LHS girl this year. Then on Thursday, on her final attempt of the meet, Deardorf exploded off the board and flew to a distance of 17'1". That mark qualifies her for the MIAA Meet of Champions, and makes her the #1 freshman jumper in Massachusetts. Another Meet of Champions qualifying performance was turned in by senior Uma Sanker. In the 800m, Sanker blasted away from the field early, going through the quarter mile in 68 seconds. She continued to pour it on over the final lap to cross the line with a new PR of 2:21.39. In perhaps the biggest breakout performance of the meet, freshman Ella Wolosoff found the form that earned her a Middle School State Championship last year in the Discus. Coming in with a PR of 76'7", Wolosoff whirled the Discus an incredible 93'11" on her first throw of the competition. She would later back that up with a 88'1" throw on her final attempt, to put a stamp on an impressive day for one of the youngest members of the Bomb Squad. In addition to qualifying her for the Middlesex League Championships, that mark makes her the top freshman in the state by over 10 feet. Clearly the future is looking bright for the Lex Girls.
The Minutemen had all they could handle from the Red and Black on Thursday afternoon. Going into the Relays they trailed Winchester by a score of 64-62, with the magic number to win a dual meet being 69 points. All that meant was Winchester needed to win either Relay - five points goes to the winner of each, and zero to the loser - in order to secure victory. In the 4x100m Relay, The Minutemen had senior Branndon Uda-Thach, junior Victor Yu, and senior captains Jayden Bai and Michael Gerfen entered in the event. While the quartet had never raced together, one would never have known it after watching them put on a clinic in the event. The team moved the baton around the 400m oval in 43.28 seconds, just a few hundredths off the A-Team's season best. Despite a hard charge from Winchester's star sprinter Daniel Killian, a late addition to the lineup, The Minutemen won the event by nearly a second. Then with score sitting at 67-64 in favor of The Minutemen, and an undefeated season on the line, it was up to senior captain Aviv Spitz, and fellow classmates Oliver Morris, Antonio Lopez, and Sam Simon to bring home the victory in the 4x400m Relay. Spitz got things off to a strong start with a 54.4 second split before handing off to Morris who got around the track in 56.5 seconds and gave his team a large lead. That lead closed to just a few meters after Lopez's 55.1 second leg. However, a seasoned relay runner with championship pedigree was anxiously waiting on the anchor leg in the form of Simon. The senior got the baton, and slammed the door shut on Winchester with a 54-flat leg. The team's time of 3:39.99 won the event by nearly four-seconds, and sealed the victory for their team. With that both the Boys' and Girls' Teams moved to 4-0 on the dual meet season.

After extreme wind, and absolutely bitter temperatures ruined any opportunity for strong performances last year, it appears that the weather will be just right for "Track Day" on Saturday, May 6th. The underclassman will take center stage beginning at 9:30am at Weymouth High School for the MSTCA Jim Hoar Freshmen/Sophomore Invitational. Then it will be LHS's best juniors and seniors who will head to the Weston Twilight Invitational. Beginning at 5pm, the meet will feature the middle and long distance events on the campus of Regis College, while the sprints, jumps, and throws will take place under the lights at Weston High School.
