RESULTS
CAMBRIDGE, MA - On Saturday a select group of LHS athletes traveled to the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to compete in the second meet of the Battle Road Track Club's Twilight Series. The highlight of the meet when unquestionably the efforts of LHS's Steeplechase Crew. The 2000m race features five laps of the 400m oval that include four 33-inch barriers and an additional water jump. In recent history, The Minutemen have had some success in the event. Evan Eberle and Ollie DiCerbo, both Class of '22 broke the school record in back-to-back heats at Historic Hayward Field as they finished top-15 at Nike Outdoor Nationals. While the event is seldom competed by Massachusetts high school athletes, as is the case with the Hammer Throw, LHS's coaching staff has the expertise to properly develop athletes to accel in an event that NCAA programs covet. This year under the guidance of Coach Halston Taylor, the Steeple Crew has flourished.
Senior Owen Lawler ran a tremendous race from start to finish. He led wire-to-wire and crossed the line with a new personal best time of 6:24.96, which was well clear of second place and ranks him MA #2 in the event. Behind Lawler was a pair of sophomores. Sam Finch just dipped under his personal best with a time of 6:42.48 that ranks him MA #8. While Will Parker broke out the golden broom for LHS to sweep the event with a third place finish. His time of 6:50.49 was a PR and ranks him MA #9. Along with the top three, sophomore Henry Finch (7:01.62) placed fifth overall with a personal best of his own. In addition to their performances on Saturday, a major credit is due to each of these athletes. They took on the challenge of training for a completely new event with which they had no experience. Perhaps the most grueling event in track & field, the steeplechase required each of them step way out of their comfort zones to learn the technique and toughness necessary to compete at a high level. Throughout the winter and spring they met those challenges head on, and were able to perform as well as anyone could have hoped in their debut season.
Other Highlights
Up Next
Monday, Lexington will host the inaugural Lexington Throwcase. A throws-only meet, it will feature some of the best prep talent from across Bay State descending upon LHS to compete on its lightening fast hammer/discus circle. Bombs are sure to be dropped as action will get underway at 4pm on May 20th.
