THE 'NEXT MAN UP' MENTALITY POWERS THE MINUTEMEN PAST BELMONT
Meet Information
Belmont Dual Meet
April 17, 2024
Burlington High School - Burlington, MA
RESULTS
BURLINGTON, MA - Traditionally there are no track & field dual meets scheduled during the April Vacation week across the Bay State. While few can point to when this became the norm, the idea is that many track & field student-athletes are out of town and away from their teams during the week. Why this is the case for track & field and not other spring sports has puzzled programs for years. However, the fact remains that it is very challenging to field competitive teams over break. Due to this, the Middlesex League scheduled no meets this week. However, the poor early spring weather led to a postponement of the League's first block of dual meets. After some shuffling and flexibility by student-athletes and coaches, it meant that LHS faced off against Belmont on Wednesday in Burlington. While neither team was anywhere close to full strength, those who were there competed well and led The Minutemen to a pair of victories. The Girls won by a score of 109-27, and the Boys won 117-18.
Sophomore Felice Haverly built on her strong start against Arlington last week. After hitting the qualifying standards for the MIAA Division 1 State Championships in the 100m and 400m against the Spy Ponders, this week she dropped a time - 25.97 seconds - that ranks her MA #2 in the 200m at this very early stage of the season. Haverly was then joined by fellow classmates Bruguers Sagues and Aubrey Deardorf, along with senior captain Jada Solomon in the 4x100m Relay. With three crisp handoffs, the quartet got the baton around the track in another MA #2 time of 51.01 seconds. Junior Caroline Kvaal had a solid season debut in the 400m Hurdles. Her time of 1:13.32 qualified her for Divisionals. The final D1 qualifying mark of the day came from captain Katie Atkins. The senior cleared the bar at 9'0" in her first competition of the season.
In the boys' meet, captain Max Zhang turned in a great double. The junior harrier began his day with a big PR of 4:35.60 to win the Mile, which qualified him for Divisionals. He returned shortly thereafter to win the 400m with another PR of 52.67 seconds. That mark improved on his Middlesex League Championship qualifying time from last week. Senior McKenna O'Hare Gibson matched Haverly's achievement of qualifying for Divisionals in the three sprint events, as he won the 100m with a personal best time of 11.02 seconds, after doing the same in the 200m and 400m last week. Fellow classmate Jacob Pan had a huge PR of 15.59 seconds in the 110m Hurdles to qualify for the Division 1 Championships. He then came back to make the League qualifying mark in the Long Jump with a season best leap of 19'9.50".

As vacation comes to a close, the spring season will heat up fast. The Minutemen will host the Woburn Tanners this coming Thursday, April 25th. On the girls' side, this has become one of the signature rivalries in the Middlesex League. Last year, LHS traveled to Woburn and snapped the Tanners' streak of 31 straight dual meet victories with a 69-67 victory that came down to the final event of the meet. This past winter, the Tanners got some payback as they handed The Minutemen a 26-point thumping in their dual meet. However, The Minutemen came back at the Middlesex League Championships to earn a share of the title that felt more like a win outright against Woburn's loaded roster. Over the years the names and faces of this rivalry have changed. However, one thing is certain. When Lexington and Woburn get together, the competition brings out the absolute best in their student-athletes. And, you can bet the next chapter in this storied rivalry will undoubtedly live up to the billing as the marquee matchup of the regular season. Action will begin at the Lexington Center Track at 4pm.
Along with the Woburn Dual Meet, The Minutemen will send its pole vaulters to Andover to compete in the first event of the MSTCA Division 1 Relays, the Pole Vault Relay. That meet will begin on Thursday, April 25th at 3pm at Andover High School.
