RESULTS
WEYMOUTH, MA - Saturday, The Minutemen participated in the annual tradition that is "Track Day." LHS competed in three locations, at two separate meets, all in one action packed day. To begin the day, it was the underclassmen that took center stage at the Freshman/Sophomore Meet. Each track & field season, the meet gives athletes and teams the opportunity to get a glimpse into the future with regard to how they stack up against the next generation of talent in Massachusetts. For The Minutemen, if Saturday was any indication, there is a lot of firepower in the pipeline in Lexington.
While there were many great performances on the day, no male athlete from any school had a day that could compare to Lexington's own Simon Tandeih. The sophomore captain began his day with a blistering run in the 200m. He crossed the line with a nearly half-second personal best - 22.64 seconds - to earn silver in the event. However, he was just getting started. Tandeih placed third in the 110m Hurdles at this meet last spring. However, has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 12 months, and Saturday was a true coming out party for the star sophomore. In the prelims of the Hurdles he smashed the meet record and his personal best with a time of 14.97 seconds. In the finals, he was even better. After blasting through the first hurdle, Tandeih cleaned up the latter half of his race and simply ran away from his competition. He crossed the line in a sizzling time of 14.75 seconds, which was the second fastest time in school history, behind only former NCAA Division III All-American Matt Hunter (LHS '11). But he was still not done. Tandeih finished his day as the leadoff leg in the 4x100m Relay that went on to win silver. All totaled, Tandeih participated in four races, over three events, won three medals, broke a meet record twice, and was awarded the MSTCA Athlete of the Meet for his efforts. Simply sensational!
It may be impossible to measure up to Tandeih, but the performances of sophomores Ainsley Cuthbertson and Aubrey Deardorf certainly came close. Cuthbertson started off the meet in the Shot Put where she took an early lead with a throw of 33'4" in the first round. She entered finals in second place, but fired back with a big throw of 34'8.50" to retake the lead over Natick's Lillian Chisholm. However, it was Cuthbertson's fifth round throw was her best. The sophomore unleashed the 8lb steel ball a personal best distance of 35'6.50". That mark put her in the lead by nearly two feet. Unfortunately, Lincoln Sudbury's Sonia D'Ambrosio, who had not broken 34-feet in her first five throws, simply caught a big one on her final attempt that snatched victory from the LHS sophomore, who settled for silver. However, her day was just beginning. Cuthbertson headed over to her signature event, the Discus, where she showed the poise of a savvy veteran. After two throws where her technique failed her, the #2 seed faced the possibility of not qualifying for finals. Cuthbertson then rallied herself, and with a calm stand-throw took the lead from fellow teammate Ella Wolosoff. At that point, LHS's Bomb Squad sat one-two. "Wolo" then uncorked her best throw of the day in the first round of the finals, as the Discus landed 87'6". That throw would hold up to earn her the silver medal. And, after disappointment in the Shot Put, Cuthbertson got the gold she came for. While Cuthbertson made it happen in the throws, it was Deardorf who was on fire in the sprints and jumps. In the prelims of the 100m Dash, "Bubbles" came through with a PR of 12.85 seconds to qualify third for the finals, where she went on to win the bronze medal. Next up was her signature event, the Long Jump. The sophomore wasted no time in the event. She flew out to a distance of 17'7" on her first attempt, and that was it. Not only did Deardorf have the best leap of the competition, but each of her five legal jumps would have won her the event, as no other competitor cracked 17-feet. Pure dominance, and she still was not done. Deardorf was back one final time in the 4x100m Relay, where she anchored the team of fellow classmates Bruguers Sagues and Anika Steinbrecher, as well as freshman Emily Hoefkens to a bronze medal.
