INAUGURAL 'LEXINGTON THROWCASE' IS A SMASHING SUCCESS

LHS Throwing Facility - Lexington, MA
RESULTS
LEXINGTON, MA - This past fall the Lexington Public Schools approved the purchase and installation of a new hammer/discus cage on the grounds of Lexington High School. The cage, which was needed to replace the one installed at the Center Track that was too small and outdated to meet the needs of LHS's growing throws program, is the centerpiece of what is now the finest throwing facility at any public high school in Massachusetts. Throughout The Minutemen's dual meet season, athletes tested themselves on LHS's lightening fast circle, and a number of big performances resulted. On Monday, at the Lexington Throwcase, some of the best throwers in region came to LHS to compete at the premier facility in the state. The results were tremendous, as three of the top five throws in the state this year were dropped in the Girls Discus. Those marks included the MA #1 by Walpole senior Sophia Axelrod (140'7"), and #2 by Franklin senior Lily DeForge (134'0"). The facility also saw LHS's senior captain "Downtown" Elijah Brown (161'0") drop the MA #1 mark in the Boys Hammer, and North Reading senior Abigail Lilley (140'11") hit an MA #1 and US #39 throw in the girls' competition. Safe to say that the old adage of, "If you build it, they will come" holds true when it comes to premier athletic facilities.
In addition to being the top mark in the state, Brown's throw of 161'0" bested his PR by nearly 12 feet, and qualified him for the New England Hammer Throw Championships. The Lex Girls were led by sophomore Ainsley Cuthbertson and senior Quin Tandeih. Cuthbertson's throw of 113'2" was a PR that placed her fourth overall in the Discus, and now ranks her #4 on LHS's all-time list in the event. Not to be outdone, Tandeih turned in a season best of 113'1" in the Hammer. That mark placed her fourth overall.
Other Highlights
Up Next
The Minutemen now turn their eyes to the ultimate prize of the MIAA Division 1 Championship. The Championships will be held on Friday and Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend at Alumni Field on the campus of Westfield State. Both the Boys and Girls will be vying for the team title as action gets underway on Day 1 at 3pm.
