ATKINS' PR VAULTS HERSELF TO SILVER AT DAY 1 OF THE MEET OF CHAMPIONS
Meet Information
MIAA Meet of Champions Day 1
May 30, 2024
Elliott Athletic Complex - Fitchburg, MA
RESULTS
FITCHBURG, MA - The Minutemen were back at it on Thursday for Day 1 of the Meet of Champions. The former All-State Championships is no longer a scored meet, and follows an invitational-style format that leave many student-athletes on their own to compete for themselves. LHS's Track & Field Team has never bought into that idea since the format was changed in 2022, and while there was only three athletes from Lexington competing on Thursday, they had their team firmly behind them. In no event was this more visible, and audible, than the Girls Pole Vault. Senior captain Katie Atkins came to Fitchburg seeded third with a season best of 11'0". The two athletes seeded ahead of her were Acton-Boxborough's Emerson Gould, who beat Atkins for the Division 1 title, and Arlington's Erin Moran, who bested Atkins at the Middlesex League Championships. Atkins knew she would need to be at her best against her chief rivals, and that is exactly what she delivered. With her own personal cheering section in the form of her teammates lining the runway, she used her third and final attempt to clear 11'0" and match her PR. Then bar then moved up to 11'6", where she once again road the roar of the crowd to soar over the bar, this time on her second attempt. With that, Atkins landed in a second place behind Moran, after Gould needed three tries to make it over the height. In the end, none of the three made it over 12'0", which meant that LHS's pole vault queen walked away with the silver medal after a lifetime best competition. With her second place finish, Atkins earned a spot at next week's New England Championships in New Hampshire.
