THE MINUTEMEN FINISH MEET OF CHAMPIONS WITH A FLURRY OF SEASON BESTS
Meet Information
MIAA Meet of Champions Day 2
June 1, 2024
Elliott Athletic Complex - Fitchburg, MA
RESULTS
FITCHBURG, MA - Unlike last week's six MIAA Divisional Championship meets, the drama of a team competition is not a part of the Meet of Champions. This was especially disappointing for athletes and spectators because of what would have been in the Boys and Girls meets. On the backs of just three incredible student-athletes, Westford Academy's boys racked up 52 would-be points, which doubled would-be runner-up Brockton's total of 26. On the girls' side, the Division 5 Champions from North Reading turned in a performance for the ages. Scoring 37 would-be points over the two-day meet, the Hornets would have walked away as All-State Champions by just one point over Division 1 Westford Academy. With 200 school competing, LHS's girls scored 15.5 would-be points, which was 14th overall. The boys managed two would-be points, which put them in a tie for 70th.
For The Minutemen, Day 1 was highlighted by senior captain Katie Atkins's 11'6" clearance to capture silver in the Girls Pole Vault. On Day 2, the top performer of the meet for LHS was none other than sophomore Aubrey "Bubbles" Deardorf. The star sophomore flew to a mark of 18'2.50" in the Long Jump, which earned her a fifth place medal. Along with the hardware, that mark was just shy of her personal best and school record leap of 18'4" from earlier this season. Deardorf was back at the end of the meet to anchor the 4x100m Relay along with fellow classmates Bruguers Sagues and Felice Haverly, as well as senior captain Jada Solomon. The quartet ran a tremendous race and finished in a tie for fifth place with a season best and #2 all-time LHS mark of 49.50 seconds. LHS's boys were led by the performances of their 4x8 and 4x1 relays. The 3200m relay featured a team of all juniors that placed eighth overall with a season best time of 8:02.35, as Will Fletcher (2:00.0), Zach Barry (2:00.2), James Joseph (2:04.2), and captain Max Zhang (1:57.8) got the job done. As was the case with the girls' 4x1, the boys also managed to turn in the second fastest time in LHS history. The team of freshman Cayden Chambers, junior Tim George, and seniors Khai Uda-Thach and McKenna O'Hare Gibson placed eighth with a time of 42.69 seconds.
