SHARON, MA - Saturday in what was a true all day affair, The Minutemen traveled down to the Coaches Invite. While the meet was not scored, it did offer one final chance to see how athletes measured up to some of the best talent in eastern Massachusetts before Championship Season gets going this week. Not only were The Minutemen up to the challenge, but they exceed expectations across the board. To put it simply it was a banner day for the 2019 LHS Track & Field program with 28 personal or season best performances being turned in between the boys and girls teams.
The middle and long distance groups had without question the best collective day of the season. First in the Mile junior Danna Ofek, coming in with a personal best of 5:20, opened her first half mile in 2:36... then she turned it on. Closing her final lap in a blistering 73 seconds the LHS standout finished in 5:08.08 - less than one-tenth of a second off the school record - to place fourth. Junior Pauline Steines had a tremendous day of her own. The seeded section of the 800m went out in a pedestrian 71 seconds (by 800 standards) through the first quarter mile and as the pace quickened over the final lap Steines sat patiently before unleashing a furious kick down the homestretch, crossing the line in third place with a new personal best time of 2:21.62. Her time also qualified her for the Division 1 Championships. Following closely behind Steines was fellow classmate Lily Sheth who was fifth with a PR of 2:22.65. The two were back to close out the 4x400m Relay along with sophomores Catherine Movsessian and Aylin Bruce with a season best time of 4:11.73, placing fourth. In addition to the stellar day on the track, star junior Rachel Caldwell-Glixon found herself again in the High Jump. After a frustrating season in her signature event, RCG had her best jump of the season soaring over the bar at 5'2". In the end six competitors finished at that same mark and RCG ended up fourth overall on jumps. The junior now ranks MA #9 in the High Jump, after landing at MA #8 in the Long Jump last weekend.
On the boys side Jarret Dlugy had a breakthrough in the Discus. Coming into the meet with a personal best of 119'2", the sophomore uncorked his first throw over 130 feet. His best throw of the competition traveled 133'4" placing him seventh overall and qualifying him for Divisionals. Another big performance was turned in by junior Salvador Jaramillo. After suffering a gruesome injury last spring, the sprinter showed that he is back and better than ever in the 100m Dash. Jaramillo ran 11.36 in the prelims to qualifying in the last spot for the finals where he would place eighth. His time was a personal best by nearly two-tenths of a second, a huge jump in the 100m. He was then back in the 4x100m Relay along with Alex Hiser, Alex Murphy and Brian Her to place fourth in 44.39. Andrew McGovern showed that he too is firing on all cylinders in his best two events. He began the day by looking smooth in the first event of the meet, the 400m Intermediate Hurdles. Running in the seeded heat he cruised to a season best 56.40 which ranks him MA #7 and placed him fourth overall in yesterday's meet. He then returned at the end of the meet to anchor the 4x800m Relay. In that race his teammates - Selvin Backert, Eli Gappelberg, and Josh Backert - gave him the baton with a sizable lead. When McGovern took the stick he charged through his leg clocking an unofficial split of 1:56.2 to dominate the rest of the field by over 10 seconds. The Minutemen's time of 8:00.08 was the fastest run by LHS since 2016 and ranks them MA #3.
