MCGOVERN'S SCHOOL RECORD HIGHLIGHTS DIVISIONALS FOR THE MINUTEMEN
Meet Information
MIAA Division 1 Eastern Massachusetts Championships
May 25, 2019
Norwell High School - Norwell, MA
RESULTS
NORWELL, MA - Saturday The Minutemen traveled back down to the South Shore to compete at the Divisional Championships. The girls had a strong showing by scoring 26 points and finishing 8th, but the girls from Natick simply dominated the meet from start to finish scoring an impressive 109 points besting the field by 40. On the boys side the meet was much closer than expected, but Lowell High School continued their dominance of Division 1 winning with 79 points. Lexington's boys finished 16th with 19 points.
Despite not cracking the top 15 as a team, the boys had a number of strong performances. However, none stood out more than that of Andrew McGovern. Competing in a rare double for most athletes, the star junior placed in both the 400m Intermediate Hurdles and the 800m, and advanced to the All-State Meet in both events. In the hurdles, McGovern ran in an absolutely stacked field that featured the three top athletes in the state in the event - all of whom would break the previous meet record. The strong field only helped McGovern because despite clipping the ninth hurdle and almost losing his feet, he charged through the final stretch to a fourth place finish in a personal best time of 55.01 seconds. That time broke the previous LHS record (55.06) set in 2013 by Peter Katsarakas. Less than two hours later McGovern was back on the line in another stacked heat. This time he was able to run a second off his PR to place eighth in 1:57.63. Along with McGovern's big day, fellow classmate Sal Jaramillo had a breakout performance in the 100m Dash. Coming in seeded 15th at 11.36 seconds there was little expectation for the junior to make any noise in the event, but after a technical correction he made earlier this week Jaramillo came out firing in the prelims running 11.17 seconds and qualifying for finals. He then bested that PR by running 11.09 in the finals to place fourth and advance to All-States.
For the girls, junior Danna Ofek had the highest finish on the day. As she did indoors, she placed third in the 2 Mile but this time running 11:13.83. The surprise performance of the day came from the 4x400m Relay. The team of sophomores Aylin Bruce, Catherine Movsessian, Sunny Tang and junior captain Lily Sheth ran tremendous in the unseeded heat and placed seventh in a season best time of 4:09.79. It was especially impressive because Sheth anchored the relay with an unofficial split of 61.5 seconds after already having run in the open 800 and the 4x800. The groups impressive run was also able to earn them a spot at All-States.
