BURLINGTON, MA - This week senior captain Joe Tibbles traveled to Burlington to compete in the Decathlon. The event features athletes battling through 10 events over two grueling days of competition, with the winner staking their claim to being the states' best athlete. Methuen's Roan Marcano earned the right to that title by winning the event with an impressive score of 6275. As for Tibbles, it was only his second time competing in the Decathlon, having finished 27th last year with 4368 points. But after another year of training under his belt The Minutemen's captain was ready to leave his mark on the multi-events as his high school career winds down. He did just that as he put up personal bests in seven of the events and finished with a new personal record point total of 4761. That PR also was enough for a huge improvement in his standings as he finished 15th overall.
Tibbles began the Decathlon with a strong first day. In the first event he ran a PR of 12.12 seconds in the 100m Dash to earn 628 points. He then followed it up with a PR of 18'9.25" in the Long Jump, which earned him 494 points. The senior finished his day with a 33'3.25" toss in the Shot Put, a PR of 4'10.25" in the High Jump and scored 609 points with a 400m Dash time of 54.75. After Day 1 Tibbles sat at 2632 points - a hundred points ahead of last year's pace. On Day 2, Tibbles used four more personal bests to achieve his final score. First running a personal best 19.40 seconds in the 110m Hurdles. He then launched a nearly 20 foot PR in the Discus (96'8"), which earned him 454 points. In the Triple Jump, his leap of 33'6" was good for 268 points. His Javelin throw of 118'1" was over a seven foot PR, good for 384 points. The final event of the Decathlon is the 1500m, which for many athletes is survived more than raced. For Tibbles that was definitely the case, but despite running on tired legs after nine tough events The Minutemen's captain ran on grit alone and turned in a 16 second PR. His time of 4:48.87 achieved his second highest point total of any of the 10 events (625).
Tibbles' career with LHS is now all but finished, and while his name will not be etched into record books or listed among the all-time greats with regard to his performances on the track, his mark on the team will non-the-less be remembered. Throughout his career he truly was the heart and soul of the program, and his grit and toughness rubbed off on his teammates every day at practice as well as on meet days. Whether it was firing up his squad before a meet, always being willing to compete in any event to help his team, or being the guy the coaches wanted on the track with the meet on the line, Tibbles showed his team everyday what it means to be a leader and furthermore to be hardwired with the heart of a champion.

Rachel Caldwell-Glixon competed in her first ever Heptathlon this week. The female alternative to the Decathlon features athletes competing four events on Day 1 before coming back to the track for another three on Day 2. The LHS Indoor and Outdoor Pentathlon record holder had her eyes on another multi-event school record, but this time would have to add the 200m Dash and the Javelin Throw to the five Pentathlon events to which she is accustomed. In the Day 1 events, "RCG" started out by scoring 685 points with a 16.24 in the 100m Hurdles. She then jumped 4'10.25" in the High Jump before tossing the Shot Put 25'0". Her lone PR of the day came in the 200m Dash where she ran 27.86 seconds to earn 642 points. In the Day 2 events the LHS junior first jumped 15'5" in the Long Jump. She then launched a personal best (76'1") of over 11 feet in the Javelin to score 349 points. RCG finished the Heptathlon by running 2:51.18 in the 800m. Her final score was 3599 and placed her fourth overall in the event - North Reading's Ali Grasso took home the title with 3982 points. However, RCG's mark fell shy of LHS Class of 2010 great Ally Crooke's mark of 3650, set in 2009.
Despite missing the school record, RCG will be back with The Minutemen for what should be nothing short of a stellar senior year. Currently she holds two school records and is within striking distance of a handful of others. If she puts in the hard work and continues to build on the success of her previous two years, there is no doubt that RCG will go down as one of the greatest athletes to ever come through the Lexington Track & Field program.
