GUPTA ESTABLISHES HIMSELF AS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY IN THE HAMMER
Meet Information
New England Hammer Throw Championships
June 4, 2019
Conely Stadium - Providence, RI
RESULTS
Michael Gupta traveled to Rhode Island on Tuesday to represent Lexington High School against the best Hammer Throwers in New England. After a season full of fouls and inconsistency, Gupta found himself again in the Conely Stadium circle. His season best coming into Tuesday was only 162 feet but on his first throw of competition, Gupta got the Hammer 186'2" out in the sector. Coming from the first of two flights, Gupta had dominated the other throwers in his flight and made finals with a best of 193'4".
In the finals, the LHS junior fouled his first attempt before dropping an absolute bomb on his second throw. The throw traveled an impressive 195'4" and would stand as his best throw of the day. Coming into the meet with a previous PR of 168'10", his throw represented over a 15 foot improvement for an athlete who's only been throwing the Hammer for a year. Perhaps even more impressive was that throw, which ranks him US #21 - 10th among juniors - only placed him sixth in an incredibly talented field of competitors in Providence. Despite finishing sixth it is clear that Gupta is in peak form and ready to turn heads when he heads down to North Carolina next week for the National Championships.
Up Next
The Minutemen are back in action this Saturday at the New England Championships. The meet - at Thorton Academy in Saco Maine - will feature the top athletes from the northeast and is set to get underway at 10am.
