OFEK'S STRONG RACE HIGHLIGHTS THE MINUTEMEN'S DAY AT NEW ENGLANDS
Meet Information
New England Championships
June 8, 2019
Thorton Academy - Saco, ME
RESULTS
Saturday The Minutemen's star distance runner Danna Ofek represented Lexington High School at the New England Championships. Coming in as the 18th seeded runner in the 3200m, Ofek raced in the unseeded section but that did not stop the junior harrier from making herself know to the best in New England. Over the eight laps that makes up the nearly two mile race, Ofek and Coventry Rhode Island's Haley Oliver went toe-to-toe for the top finish. As she has done all season for The Minutemen Ofek sat back for the majority of the race before charging to the lead in the final meters of the race and grabbing the victory by just over a second. Ofek's time of 11:03.01 converts to just off her season best time in the 2 Mile but still was good enough to earn her a 10th place finish overall - the highest finish at the Outdoor New Englands by an LHS girl since Jessica Batty (Class of 07') placed 10th in 2007.
While Ofek will go on to compete with her 4x800m relay mates in the Emerging Elite Division at Nationals this coming week, her race on Saturday signaled the end of what can be called nothing less than a stellar individual season. Ofek came into the season with personal bests of 5:23.98 and 11:25.39 in the Mile and 2 Mile, but everything clicked for her outdoors as she lowered her PRs to 5:08.08 and 11:07.66 respectively. Along with the times, the junior brought home the hardware in her signature events by finishing second in the 2 Mile at Weston Twilight, fourth at the MSTCA Coaches Invitational Mile, and by winning the 2 Mile at the Middlesex League Championships, the bronze medal at Divisionals, and placing sixth at All-States. It can not be overstated how far this young runner has come in such a short time and if this season's successes are any indication of things to come, then The Minutemen will have front row seats to one of the best runners in the Northeast all next year.
Other Highlights for The Minutemen
Up Next
