READING, MA - Wednesday afternoon The Minutemen traveled to Reading. For the boys, this meant the last two undefeated teams in the Middlesex League would go toe-to-toe with the winner claiming the League's Regular Season Championship. Not only were the Rockets a strong team, but their strengths aligned with LHS's weaknesses in many events. Despite the strength of Reading, going into the 2 Mile - the final event before the two relays - The Minutemen only needed to finish first and second to clinch the meet. With an undefeated season on the line, the coaches called on brothers Max and Lucas DiCerbo and a trio of freshmen to bring home the title. The group did just that. After going through the first mile and a half with a loan RMHS runner trying to keep the Rockets' hopes alive, the crew drove the pace over the final two laps and took the top five spots with Max DiCerbo leading the way in a time of 10:22.2h and Lucas finishing in 10:23.4h. The Minutemen would go on to win both the 4x100m (in a season best time of 43.3h) and 4x400m relays to finish off the victory by a final score 84 to 52.
On the girls side The Minutemen gave the Rockets a strong challenge but unfortunately came up short, falling by a score of 77 to 59. Highlighting The Minutemen's efforts on the day was freshman Raquel Batista-Vieira. She began the day by winning the Shot Put in a personal best 29'3.25", but truly saved her best for last. In the Discus the freshman unleashed a throw that went a personal best distance of 91'4", besting her previous PR by over three feet. In addition to winning the event, that throw makes her the first LHS freshman and only second LHS thrower (boy or girl) to have achieved the mark for the Division 1 Championships in two weeks.
