LEXINGTON, MA - For the final time this season The Minutemen hosted a Middlesex League rival on their home track, and for the Woburn High School Tanners it was a tale of two completely different meets. In the boys meet it was an absolute runaway by LHS as they won 13 of 16 events, sweeping seven of them. When Josh Backert crossed the line to win the 4x400m, the final score stood at 114 to 22 in favor of The Minutemen. On the contrary the girls meet featured both The Minutemen and Tanners battling it out throughout the meet, but in the end Woburn simply had too much firepower and came away with a 77 to 59 victory.
For the girls, junior Danna Ofek got things going with a convincing win in the Mile (5:25.0h). Senior captain Sam Robinson followed it up during the field event break by winning the Javelin with a season best throw of 87'2". After the field event break juniors Rachel Caldwell-Glixon and Pauline Steines injected some life back into The Minutemen's chances by outlasting their Woburn rivals. For RCG it came in the 100m High Hurdles where she won with a season best 15.5h seconds. Steines was able to win a very physical 800m run, out-kicking her opponent to finish in a personal best time of 2:24.1h. Despite many other strong efforts by the ladies of LHS, by the time the 2 Mile came around the meet had been decided. Regardless, senior captain Kesinia Sortor went out and won the 2 Mile and both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays won in convincing fashion - the 4x100m team doing so in a season best 53.8h seconds.
The boys had many highlights through their dominating performance with numerous personal bests, as well as a number of Divisional and League Championship qualifying marks but it was a freshman who arguably had the most impressive performance on the afternoon. Evan Eberle toed the line in the 800m with a personal best less than a second away from the Freshman Nationals standard of 2:03.00, and the hope was for the Woburn rivalry to bring the best out of the young harrier. It did just that. Following junior Selvin Backert, the freshman came through the quarter mile in 59 seconds. The two then charged down the back stretch of the final lap with a pack of Lexington and Woburn runners right on their heels, but as they approached the final straightaway Backert and Eberle had gapped the field and were driving for the finish. Backert crossed first to grab the win in a season best 2:01.6h but Eberle was right on his heels, finishing second and getting the qualifying standard by finishing in 2:02.3h! Coming into LHS as one of the best middle distance runners in Diamond Middle School's impressive history, there were high expectations for the freshman to make an impact at the High School level right away. After achieving this time, he not only has met that expectations but moved the bar even higher for himself. His time now ranks him in the top 100 in the country among freshmen. However, with over a month to go in the season the team expects Eberle's passion and drive to improve to continue to take him to even greater heights this season and beyond.
