WESTON, MA - Star sophomore Rachel Caldwell-Glixon continued her breakout year at the first event of the Division 1 Eastern Massachusetts Championships, the Pentathlon. With each female athlete competing in the 100 meter High Hurdles, the Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put, and finishing with the 800 meters, Caldwell-Glixon showed that she is one of the top athletes in the state with her performance Thursday afternoon. She lead off the day with a 16.37 second 100 meter hurdle time. Then followed it up with a leap of 4.95 meters in the Long Jump. After that it was a near season best jump of 1.51 meters in the High Jump. She followed that with a throw of 7.58 meters in the Shot Put. Finally, she capped off the event with a ten second personal best of 2:39.28 in the 800 meters. Her final score was a personal best 2858, which placed her second in the event and picked up eight points for The Minutemen going into the start of the main portion of the Championships on Sunday. Caldwell-Glixon's performance today came one day after the team's end of season banquet where she was award the team's Best Newcomer Award. With this being only her first year of Outdoor Track, it is fair to say that this season has just been a glimpse into what this young athlete is capable of in years to come.
For the boys, it was senior Dan Crooke and sophomore Liam Cotter who's efforts were able to combine to put The Minutemen in a tie for second place going into Sunday's Championships with six points. Crooke lead the way for The Minutemen placing fifth with his final score of 2869 points. He ran the 110 meter High Hurdles in 16.55 seconds. His leap of 6.36 meters in the Long Jump was a personal best. He followed that up with a jump of 1.72 meters in the High Jump. Then he threw the Shot Put 9.18 meters. Finally, he finished off his day with a 5:04.45 1500 meter run. Cotter was coming off of winning the team's Most Improved Award at last night's banquet. With that in mind, he had himself the kind of day the multi-event athletes dream off, setting a personal best in four out of the five events. He lead off the meet in style with a personal best 16.79 seconds in the hurdles. Then followed that up with a personal best Long Jump of 5.61 meters. His jump of 1.52 meters was a personal best in the High Jump. And while his throw of 7.54 meters in the Shot Put was not a personal best, it was still a strong performance. Cotter finished off the day with one final personal best, by six seconds, in the 1500 meters where he ran 4:43.18. All totaled he scored 2553 points in the events, which placed him seventh overall, and scored two points for The Minutemen.
