LEXINGTON, MA - On Tuesday, on a day that was by far the best weather that The Minutemen have raced in all season, the Girls came up with their best performance of the year against archrival Woburn. The last home meet of the season for The Minutemen saw the Tanners come into Lexington as the two-time defending undefeated champions of the Middlesex League. By days end that streak was put to bed by what can only be called a gritty effort by The Minutemen.
Through the first mile it was a modest pace, with a pack of 10 runners coming through between 6:25 and 6:30. From there the race was on. As she has done in every race this season, standout junior Danna Ofek lead the way for The Minutemen. Breaking away from the pack in the second and third miles, Ofek won the race comfortably in a new personal best time of 19:35. Ofek was followed by senior captain Kesinia Sortor who put in her best race of the season by finishing runner up in a time of 19:45. Following Sortor were a pair of Tanners crossing the line in third and fourth place. Junior Pauline Steines placed fifth with a time of 20:12. She was followed by another pair of Tanners placing sixth and seventh. With four Tanners having crossed the line and only three Minutemen, the meet came down to the two youngest members of Lexington's top five. Simply put, sophomores Lina Jafaar (20:29) and Anna Nelson (20:38) came up big for The Minutemen. They both outlasted the Tanners fifth runner and sealed the victory by placing eighth and ninth respectively. The final score of the meet was Lexington 25 - Woburn 30, and the result puts The Minutemen in the drivers' seat to capture the Middlesex League Regular Season Championship with one dual meet to go.
On the Boys side The Minutemen took care of business, winning by a score of 22-37. However, the true story of the race was the battle for the individual win. Woburn senior Anshel Isles, Lexington's senior captain Eli Gappelberg and star sophomore Nick Porter were battling all race long at a blistering pace. In the end all three boys broke Zach Manickas-Hill's (LHS-15') course record of 16:17, but it was Isles who left the course with the victory in new course record time of 16:05. Gappelberg's time of 16:14 and Porter's 16:16 placed them second and third. After the top three, The Minutemen would take 8 of the next 11 places and cruise to victory.
