LEXINGTON, MA - The Scene: In what was the final time The Lexington Track & Field teams would compete on the Center Track before its demolition and reconstruction, slated to begin before next season, the Boys and Girls were not about to leave their home track without one final victory. And after the dust from the long jump pit had settled, the Girls held up their end of the bargain sealing the second team victory on the afternoon by a score of 82-54 over Winchester.
Simply put, The Minutemen turned in their best all around performance of the season. Sophomore Chrisondra Awomah continued her stellar season by smashing the school record in the Shot Put, which she had tied last weekend, with a throw of 37'2". Before that winning performance, Awomah had already launched a personal best of 81'8" in the Discus, picking up second place in the event. Senior Sophie Chong got the meet off in the right direction for the Girls by winning the 400 intermediate hurdles in a time of 1:12.7. She would later come back to win the 800 meters in a time of 2:29.1.
On the track, in addition to Chong's double gold performance, it was a pair of sophomores and a junior who led the way. First, it was standout sophomore Rachel Caldwell-Glixon taking the 100 meter High Hurdles in a personal best 15.7 seconds. Then junior Candela de Amorrortu out leaned her opponent in the 100 meter dash, taking the event in a season best 12.8 seconds. Next, in the 400 meter dash, it was sophomore Lily Sheth's turn. She did not dissapoint, running a personal best 1:00.2 seconds to grab the win. Finally, to end the action on the track the 4x400 meter relay team of Sheth, Sunny Tang, Aylin Bruce, and Pauline Steines took the tape with The Minutemen's fastest time on the season (4:21.8).
While the efforts on the track were outstanding to say the least, the Girls truly pulled away in the field events. The "golden broom," as the team calls a sweep of an event, was achieved in the High Jump with personal bests by junior Sydney Porter (4'10"), and sophomore Maeva Viaud (4'6"), and in her final meet as a senior Sophia Ciara picked up third place with a jump of 4'4". Not to be outdone, the senior trio of Kimia Abedi (32'8.5"), Maya Mudgal (32'7"), and Aisling Lavelle (30'5.5") picked up a golden broom of their own in the Triple Jump. Senior Joan Sullivan ended her dual meet career with one final win and personal best in the Discus 94'6". She also finished second behind Awomah in the Shot Put (29'0").
On the Boys side it was another example of The Minutemen running their opponent right off their home track. The golden broom came out early as sophomore Selvin Backert (4:41.2), freshmen Maxim Slobodchikov (4:45.1), and senior Nick Manickas-Hill (4:49.2) swept the Mile. The freshmen trio of Nick Porter, Nate Croke, and Max Di Cerbo had a sweep of their own in the 2 Mile. But it was senior Dan Crooke, in the final dual meet of his career, who truly set the tone for The Minutemen on the day. He started off his day with a decisive victory in the 110 meter High Hurdles (15.8). Crooke followed that up with the highest jump by any Minutemen this year in the High Jump (5'10"), which was good enough for second place. Then just for good measure Crooke finished his day up with a victory in the Long Jump by leaping 20'1.5".
It was not until an hour before the meet it was revealed to the members of the Boys and Girls teams that this would in fact be the last meet on the Center Track, which had been built before many of the athletes had even been born. The coaches challenged the team to send the oval out with two more victories, and to the pleasure of everyone in Blue and Gold that is exactly what they did.
