THE MINUTEMEN'S TOP 5 TAKE IT ANOTHER LEVEL AGAINST ARLINGTON
Meet Information
Arlington Dual Meet
October 12, 2020
Hastings Park - Lexington, MA
RESULTS: A-RACE
RESULTS: B-RACE
LEXINGTON, MA - Monday, the girls were back at Hastings Park for their second meet of the season. The Minutemen faced off against a tough young team in the Spy Ponders of Arlington. It appears that the girls are getting used to racing in masks as the team's average time for their top five dropped over 25 seconds from last week. That effort was enough to take the top four spots and breeze to victory 17-38.

Twas bright and early this past Monday morning when the Lexington Girls Cross Country team returned for their second and certainly not their last go round on the home course this season. They met promptly beforehand in the Lexington High School parking lot yet again, due to Walgreens’ lack of enthusiasm to sponsor them despite their stellar performances last meet (how rude). The air was crisp, and despite everyone's valiant warmup efforts, no one was really all that warm when toeing the line to begin their endeavors. In fact, it took yours truly just about a mile and a half to regain the feeling in my feet, but once that came back they felt every remaining step of the race fully. But cold feet aside, let’s move on to some of the hot performances of the morning.
Beginning with Lexington’s wave one, consisting of a lineup of girls who never disappoint, The Minutemen took home the win Monday against one of the most challenging opponents they will race this season in impressive fashion. Sophomore Mirra Payson led the race yet again and was first to cross the line in 20:40. Unfortunately, unlike last week, I did not get to see her and missed her dearly on Baskin due to the time change in between waves. Next to cross the line was Clara Fu who said bye bye to her old home course PR and hello to the land of sub 21 minutes, running a dazzling 20:46. Shortly after, Anna Nelson finished beating her time from last week by a great margin by running a 20:47. Then of course came captain Lauren “anyone else want a handful of tic tacs before we race” Sterne who also joined the sub 21 minute club running a speedy 20:53. Lauren’s performance Monday morning made me wonder if we should all ingest an entire package of breath mints before racing because it seemed to work wonderfully.
There were also some hot performances in wave two including Zoe Gu who thankfully did not have an SAT Monday morning. The senior putdown a very respectable 21:10. Also one of wave two’s finest, Julia Lennon-Newell busted out a 21:23, which would have put her as one of the top ten finishers in wave one. Sophomore Uma Sanker ripped a speedy time of 22:17 and is on her way to breaking the 22 minute mark. Not long after came Casey Weisberg who ran a 22:44 which bested her time from last Saturday by a good deal. These girls really brought the heat.
Finally, of course everyone’s favorite wave (wave three… duh) consisted of a mere five runners Monday morn. There was a lack of a critical mass due to injury and it was palpable as the runners in wave three headed to the starting line. But not to worry, this did not spoil the moods of any of the wave three runners. In fact we all found it quite hilarious how lonely we looked. Coach Trax, still on her runner's high from her 30k on Sunday, did a great job of pumping the five of us up and as the gun went off we were super duper psyched. This wave’s hot performance shout out goes to senior captain Aylin Bruce for taking home the wave three gold medal with a quick 23:19.
The AHHH-lington girls gave a good fight but Lexington was ready as always. The Spy Ponders’ ladies were led by sophomore Simone Harrison, who finished fifth overall in 20:56. Plus the fact that none of them ran up Mount Loring more than once is always a success! This leads me to believe the course directing on Monday deserves a five star Yelp review. Anyway, there will be two more chances for runners to get lost on Lexington’s crazy, but cherished, course this season. We can all wish upon a shooting star that volunteer course directors will be on par with the immaculate efforts of our own Lauren Sterne, in order to guide runners in the right direction.
Until next race, and by then hopefully the Stop and Shop shopping cart on Worthen has been relocated and Walgreens has come around!
