LEXINGTON, MA - On Tuesday, The Minutemen finally opened up the Middlesex League’s Regular Season at home against Freedom Division rival Burlington. For The Minutemen and the Red Devils this meant a chance to take on the challenge of our infamous home course and the treacherous Loring hill - but judging by both teams’ wins - the Lex Girls by a score of 19-44, and the Boys winning 25-34 - they had a good Outlook!
“Runner on the Course” by Serena Caira, Uma Sanker & Ashley Taylor
Tensions were definitely high considering that Burlington showed up to our own course well ahead of us. However, that became a miniscule detail when the girls team banded together at the start line. As an aside, we are extremely proud of the great teamwork the girls showed on Tuesday. The upperclassmen really stepped up to show the freshmen how to run our brutally challenging 5k course. Winning her first race of the season, junior Uma “sank her boat” Sanker (21:04) got a new PR and managed to keep her boat afloat this race! Ya like jazz? So do we! Next up was fellow classmate “Jazz”mine Sun (22:05) who also PRed to place third overall. Coming in fourth place overall was freshman crowd-favorite Mirei “the mighty” Saneyoshi who turned in an impressive 22:10 for her first ever 5k. Not to be outdone, fellow classmate Brett Castro finished seventh in a time of 22:22 (smiling all the way).
Along with the strong performances from the Varsity girls, the JV team had some stellar times of their own. Junior Sarah Lane followed the PR trend (#slane) with a time of 23:05 to finish first among the JV athletes. Just a few seconds later, sophomore Maya Dubrovsky (23:08) and senior captain Casey Weisberg (23:11) blazed in with notable finishes. We also want to congratulate Jillian “Slay” Stevens who accomplished her goals of smiling for the camera, as well as maintaining a positive mindset throughout this race. Her time on Tuesday was over three minutes faster than her previous season best!
Now, time to move onto our aspiring Strava journalists of the team: The Boys!
Things were a little uneasy as Burlington’s top two runners finished one-two across the line, but after an inauspicious start, The Minutemen packed the finished line with the next five runners. Leading Lexington was senior captain Ollie DiCerbo had an impressive first race back on the home course with a PR time of 17:00. After a 21-second delay, senior Thomas Lane (17:21) led a string of four boys across the line. Senior captain Graham Bracken was next in 17:31coming in with a solid fifth place. Fellow captain Noah Quadri and junior Aidan McPhee rounded out the top five, running 17:47 and 17:49 respectively. We especially wanted to recognize Aidan who stepped up for the varsity race and impressively came in seventh place, despite his “hammies still hurting.” (copyright Aidan McPhee, Strava 2021).
In the Boys JV race, there were quite a lot of stellar performances. Special shoutout to junior Kyle Taylor, who led the pack with a time of 18:34. He was followed closely by sophomore Toshio Yuki, who certainly decided to Toshi-SHOW up today with a personal best time of 18:51. Rounding out the top three was junior Alex Newton-Cheh (19:08).
See you this Saturday, for the well-loved Ocean State Invitational – where we hope to earn apples – in Road Island!
