EBERLE AND PAYSON BREAKTHROUGH TO LEAD THE MINUTEMEN OVER WINCHESTER

Winchester Dual Meet
September 30, 2021
Horn Pond - Woburn, MA

WOBURN, MA - After the meet was postponed due to inclement weather on Tuesday, The Minutemen finally made it to Horn Pond to face off against the Red & Black from Winchester. On the boys side senior captain Evan Eberle took the tape and led his team to a 21-38 victory. The Lex Girls were led by junior Mirra Payson who ran her best rest of the year as well when her team needed it most. She won the race and The Minutemen won the meet by the narrow margin of 26-30.

“Runner on the Course” by Serena Caira, Uma Sanker & Ashley Taylor
The Minutemen were glad to see that they were finally racing on a flat course, despite what the coaches said about the Highland Park course. Unfortunately, this three mile loop was lacking the one-tenth of a mile that many of The Minutemen needed to set new 5k PRs. Regardless, LHS came with its best as the boys and girls blazed around Horn Pond.  .

During our pre-pre meet practice – since the race got postponed – Coach Trax told the girls team she had all the confidence that we could get the job done against Winchester. This might have put a little added pressure on but luckily it ended up coming true with the girls securing a win with a total of 26 points, narrowly beating Winchester by just 4 points. From the get-go, your favorite speedy duo, junior Mirra “I hate ice cream with a passion” Payson (18:43) and senior captain Clara Fu (18:51) broke away from the pack, finishing first and second respectively. Finishing after Claire Cunningham’s long lost sister from Winchester, Hannah Cunningham, came junior Uma Sanker (19:41) - we’ll throw an “always 41” in there just for you Coach Trax. Coming shortly after Sanker, was senior captain Camelia “our meme page is better than flexxctf” Atassi (19:58). The all important fifth runner was junior Jasmine Sun, who’s time of 20:09 was enough secure the W for the Lex Girls.

Not to disappoint, your favorite JV girls had not liquid, but solid performances! Luckily, no one fell in Horn Pond (liquid). Breaking the tape for the JV girls was your favorite “Runner on The Course” author (besides Uma and Ashley), junior Serena Caira (21:16)! Close behind was the one-two punch of senior captain Casey Weisberg (21:22) and sophomore Maya Dubrovosky (21:26). We here at “Runner on the Course” hope that Casey was able to count to ‘23’ as well.

Next up, we had the varsity boys. Due to some of the boys “working out” around Horn Pond (who knows what they were really doing), we had a couple of new faces in the varsity squad. Coming back from an injury, senior captain Evan Eberle turned in the best performance of his XC career. Neck-and-neck with Winchester senior Andrew Gosselin with 400m to go, he was able outkick Gosselin to take the race in 15:31. Following close behind, was senior captain Graham Bracken (15:44), and one second after that, fellow classmate and captain Ollie DiCerbo (15:45). Following the trio of captains was senior Thomas Lane (16:12), who finished fourth for The Minutemen, while LHS’s fifth man across the line was (you guessed it) senior captain Noah Quadri.

In the JV race the Lex Boys also had some notable showings. First up, sophomore Toshio Yuki won the JV race with a time of 17:32. Rounding off the top JV boys was junior Jinn Janpathompong (17:36) and senior Amartya Jain tying with junior Oliver Morris with times of 17:41 each -  we would have preferred if they finished holding hands or something in the spirit of friendship, but we’ll let it slide for now.

Coming up this Tuesday we will be back at our home course where our times will definitely change, as will our confidence, when we race the extra tenth of a mile and add hills to the course. See you guys soon!

Up Next
The Minutemen have a quick turnaround as they will be back in action against Belmont. The meet - on Tuesday, October 5th - is set to take off from Lincoln Field at 4:30pm.
