LEXINGTON, MA - After a month of meets, Thursday The Minutemen finally had their first home meet of the 2022 Season. LHS welcomed the Arlington Spy Ponders for a meet, which is rapidly becoming a hotly contest rivalry. On the Girls side, last year the Spy Ponders bested the Lex Girls on their home course, at the Middlesex League Championships, and by a single point at the All-State Championships. This year The Minutemen were hoping for some payback on their home course that features challenging hills that have contributed to unmatched success for LHS over the years. Despite the home course advantage, the Spy Ponders proved to be too much to handle. Their one-two punch followed by a tight pack of six girls separated by just 11-seconds led to a 38-23 defeat of the The Minutemen. Despite falling to the Spy Ponders as a team, senior Ava Criniti made history in Lexington on Thursday. The Northwestern commit won the race in a tremendous time of 18:50, which shattered former Woburn High School great Cayla Barretto's course record - set in 2016 - by 20-seconds. Criniti's time is also bested LHS Class of 2016 graduate Alex Wolf's team record of 19:26. On the Boys side, LHS was again resting its top runners ahead of the All-State preview at the Bay State Invitational. However, The Minutemen did not back down from a stout Arlington squad as their top five runners all ran huge season or personal bests. In the end, the Spy Ponders won by a score of 38-21.
After Criniti, senior captain Mirra Payson was next across the line for the Lex Girls. She clocked a time of 20:00 to place fourth after Arlington's Simon Harrison and Elise Kempf. Jasmine Sun ran a course PR of 20:55 to finish 11th overall. She was followed by junior Dora Liao, who's time was 21:11. Freshmen Nadia Abdinoor was LHS's final scorer. Abdinoor placed 14th with a time of 21:17. Rounding out the top seven for the Lex Girls was senior captain Uma Sanker (21:39) and Sophie Johnson (21:59).
While not in school record fashion, the Boys team was led by another member of the Class of 2023 who was competing in Cross Country for the first time in their high school career. Senior Aviv Spitz went toe-to-toe with Arlington senior Lou Lopes Fernandes for 5000m. In the end Fernandes was too much to handle, besting Spitz by three seconds. However, Spitz turned in a massive PR of 17:29 to place second. Another big performance came from junior captain Toshio Yuki. After struggling at the Ocean State Invitational, Yuki found his form by breaking the 18-minute barrier for the first time with a time of 17:59 to place sixth. Following close behind was senior Kyle Taylor, who's time of 18:01 was a 50-second improvement over his Ocean State time. Making his home course and 5k debut was freshman Colin Smith (18:23) who placed 11th. The Minutemen's fifth man was Zach Barry. The sophomore crossed the line in 18:30, followed closely by freshman Sam Finch (18:31) and senior captain Ian Miller (18:33).
