ALL-STATE PREVIEW: THE MINUTEMEN COMPETE AT FORT DEVENS FOR BAY STATE INVITE
Meet Information
Bay State Invitational
October 8, 2022
Fort Devens - Devens, MA
RESULTS
DEVENS, MA - It has been 1,456 days since The Minutemen last competed at the Bay State Invitational. Each year the meet offers a preview of the All-State Championships, as the best in Bay State get to test themselves on the course that will host All-States. Last year The Minutemen skipped the meet, since it was held at the Wrentham Developmental Center, a course with which LHS is extremely familiar. The previous year there were no invitationals due to COVID. And the year prior, the Town of Gardner would not allow the MSTCA to hold a meet at the Gardner Municipal Golf Course ahead of All-States. This year however - for the first time - both the Bay State Invitational and the All-State Championships are hosted in Devens at the U.S. Army Reserve military installation Fort Devens.
After giving everything they had against Arlington less than 48 hours prior, the Lex Girls used the meet as an opportunity to get a feel for the 5k course at Fort Devens, at less than max effort. Despite not going all out, LHS still showed well by finishing third overall in the 'B' Race, with the 13th fastest average time across all races. On the other side, the Boys were rested and ready to take on the challenging course. Running in a talented field, which included last year's State Champion and Wrentham Developmental Center course record holder Uxbridge senior Aidan Ross, The Minutemen managed a fifth place finish as a team in the 'B' Race - 12th among all teams.
Seniors Mirra Payson and Ava Criniti were nearly in lockstep the entire race, eventually crossing the line in 21:39.40 and 21:39.50 respectively. Next across the line was senior Uma Sanker, who ran a very controlled 21:47.40. Fellow classmate Jasmine Sun was next in a time of 21:58.80. As she was against Arlington, freshman Nadia Abdinoor (22:24.80) was the fifth Lex Girl across the line. She was followed closely by sophomore Claire Cunningham (22:29.40) and junior Dora Liao (22:29.50). The final three for The Minutemen were freshman Meghan Caldera (22:34.30), junior Maya Dubrovsky (22:54.70), and freshman Sophie Johnson (22:58.20).
In the Boys race, The Minutemen were once again led by junior Glenn Burcsu. After opening in a quick 5:18 first mile, Burcsu was able to hang on through the hilly second half of the race to place 18th in a time of 17:23.50. Next for LHS was senior captain Antonio Lopez (25th) and junior Joey "Candy Man" Ryan (26th). The two were never more than a stride apart throughout the race, and pulled each other through the line in 17:50.90 and 17:51.30 respectively. Senior captain Aidan McPhee did not have his best stuff on Saturday, but the savvy veteran gutted his way through to finish 37th overall with a time of 18:14.10. Continuing to prove to be the breakout star of the season for The Minutemen, senior Jinn Janpathompong was the fifth LHS runner across the line. His time of 18:38.60 landed him a top-50 finish, 46th overall. Sophomore Max Zhang came through in 48th place with a time of 18:43.40. He was followed by fellow classmate Nathan Cunningham (18:46.90), who finished 52nd. Rounding out the top-10 was junior captain Toshio Yuki (18:50.80), senior Jackson Monks (19:05.20), and the only freshman at the meet for the Boys, Will Parker (19:12.20).
Up Next
With invitationals behind them, The Minutemen now have three dual meets in the next three weeks to get ready for Championship Season. The first of these will be this Tuesday, October 11th when LHS will travel to Horn Pond to race against the Woburn Tanners. Anytime Lexington and Woburn get together, there are always memorable performances turned in, Tuesday will likely be no different. The meet begins at 4:30pm.
