RESULTS
LEXINGTON, MA - Lexington High School opened up Middlesex League competition on Tuesday. The team started its regular season on the course they have called home for 54 years dating back to 1970. While plenty has changed since Nixon was in the White House, what has not changed are the course's vaunted hills that have given The Minutemen the best home course advantage in the League over the last half century. Those hills came into play yet again as The Minutemen easily dispatched their Freedom Division opponents from Melrose. The Lex Girls won 20-41, while the Boys team handled the Red Hawks by a score of 21-32.
Early in the race it appeared as though the meet was going to come out with a different result for the Lex Girls, as a pair of Red Hawks led the race at the mile, just strides in front of Lexington sophomore Nadia Abdinoor and junior Claire Cunningham. Following LHS's top-two competitors was another pack of Melrose girls. However, the Lex Girls remained calm and executed their race plan to perfection over Baskin and Loring Hill. By the time the race came around to the second mile mark, Abdinoor and Cunningham had taken control of the race and a group that featured sophomore Sophie "Snacks" Johnson, freshman Erin Ehmann, junior Leontine Meunier, freshman Maite Striuli, and sophomore Thayer DiCerbo had blown apart Melrose's chase pack. In the end Abdinoor would earn the first victory of her high school career, as she crossed the finish line in a time of 21:37. Cunningham was next across the line, second overall, with a hard earned time of 22:02. Johnson (22:21) was third for The Minutemen, as she finished fourth overall. Making her home course debut in style, Ehmann finished fourth for LHS - sixth overall - with a time of 22:30. Meunier turned out to be LHS's all important fifth runner as she finished seventh with a time of 22:43. DiCerbo was next in a time of 23:02. Just behind her was another freshman making her home course debut. Striuli came across the line in a time of 23:03. Rounding out the top-10 for the Lex Girls was junior Tanvi Samavedam (23:20), followed by a pair of freshmen - Alycia Charest (23:23) and Josie Bettencourt (23:34).
The Boys were led by captain Joey "The Candyman" Ryan. The senior harrier ran in total control throughout the race as he and Melrose junior Caleb Barnes dueled for the first two miles of the race before making his move in the final mile to break away. Ryan came across the finish line in 16:24, which ranks him #6 on the All Time Performers list on LHS's 5k home course. Following Ryan was junior Max Zhang who turned in a time of 17:35 to place third overall. Sophomore Colin Smith continued the strong start to his sophomore campaign with a fourth place finish in 17:49. Next was fellow classmate Will Parker who broke the 18-minute barrier for the first time in his career with a time of 17:57, which placed him fifth. After The Minutemen's top four, there was quartet of Red Hawks who flew across the finish line. It proved to be little too late, however, as LHS's top runners had all but sealed the victory. When Caleb Ford (18:15) crossed the line in 10th place the victory was made official. Not a bad debut at home for the freshman. As for the rest of LHS's varsity squad, sophomore Owen Kuder ran 18:19 to finish 11th overall. Freshman Alden Hall was 13th with a time of 18:25. He was followed by juniors Will Fletcher (18:36) and James Joseph (18:43) who were 14th and 15th respectively.
