LEXINGTON, MA - Monday afternoon The Minutemen faced off against Arlington. On the boys side, the Spy Ponders came in as the two time defending Middlesex League Regular Season Champions - having bested The Minutemen back-to-back years. With that in mind, LHS's boys were out for a little revenge, which they got in the form of a 20-41 route of the Spy Ponders. Despite missing four of their top five runners, the girls easily cruised to a victory of their own by a score of 21-37.
The boys race was off to a hot start as The Minutemen's five captains led the field through the mile in 5:07. They continued the hard pace over the hills in the second mile when senior Micah Benson broke away from the pack. He came through the 2 Mile in 10:26 en route to winning by just under 10 seconds with a time of 16:29. The Spy Ponders' Miles Harrison used a strong final mile to finish second to Benson in 16:38, just ahead of LHS senior Adam Bernstein (16:39). Junior Max DiCerbo was next across the line in 16:45, and he was followed by senior Matt McAlarney (16:50). Fellow senior Selvin Backert was The Minutemen's fifth man in a time of 17:23. Maxim Slobodchikov (17:29) came through with a solid race just steps ahead of sophomore Daniel Ramsey (17:32). Another sophomore, Evan Eberle was LHS's next finisher with a time of 17:37. The Minutemen's final varsity finisher was Nate Croke. After being sidelined for nearly 10 months with a serious injury, the junior harrier was finally back in a LHS singlet on Monday and came through with a solid time of 17:59. All tolled, LHS took five of the top seven places and certainly made up for two years of disappointment against Arlington.
"Runner on the Course" by Izzy Jakimczyk:
The sky was dry today; as were the backs of the throats of the girls team on this lovely October afternoon. After completing the lovely course walk over The Minutemen's hilly home turf - hosted by our very own Ipek “have a nice weekend” Kendergiolu - the Arlington girls were still actually willing race. So, as always the gun went off and the girls were out (and unlike last week nobody tripped this time woohoo!). Senior captain Danna Ofek "the one-hipped-wonder" was the first to break the imaginary tape in 19:43. She was followed by junior Anna Nelson (21:20), who has two functioning hips. But the real story was on Loring hill today when three girls threw up and still toughed it out to push through to the finish. Big ups to freshman Ashley Taylor for tossing her cookies and still finishing in a pretty great time (23:08), and actually passing me in the end! Senior captain Summer Spencer (21:26), junior Zoe Gu (21:38) and senior captain Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas (21:41) were the three musketeers finishing one after the other in quite a fashion. Congrats to everyone else as well even if I didn’t put you in!
P.S. LHS's Coach Trax will be competing in the Chicago Marathon this Saturday! If we can run up Loring she sure can win the entire thing so... GOOD LUCK!
Up Next
The Minutemen have their only road dual meet of the season next Tuesday as they travel to Woburn to face their archrivals - the Tanners. The meet will be at Horn Pond and is set to get underway at 4pm.
