LEXINGTON, MA - On a cold rainy October afternoon, The Minutemen welcomed another Middlesex League Liberty Division challenger to their home course in the form of Belmont. Racing first on the afternoon, the girls' strong top five were too much for Belmont as The Lady Minutemen prevailed 21-36. The boys surrendered the top overall spot in the race, but took the next seven places to take the victory by a final score of 20-43.
Senior captain Danna Ofek was back to her winning ways on Wednesday. The girls top harrier cruised to victory in a time of 19:49. She was followed closely by freshman Mirra Payson who continued her strong season by running 19:51, besting her PR by 8 seconds. Lexington's top two were followed by a pair of Belmont runners before senior Maude Hajjaj crossed the line in 20:38. Like Payson, Hajjaj followed up a PR at last weekend's Ocean State Invite with another stellar run and personal best time of 20:38. Junior Anna Nelson was next across the line in 21:19. Senior captain Isabel Siu-Zmuidzinas was LHS's fifth runner. She locked up the team win with a season best 21:26. Along with the top five, freshman Serena Caira crushed her previously 5k PR by over 20 seconds with her time of 21:46. Fellow classmate Kayla Gordon ran 22:21. Camelia Atassi crossed the line 22:35. Junior Izzy Jakimczyk (23:18) was next across the finish. LHS's final varsity finisher was Emma Reddy, who's time of 23:52 placed her 18th overall.
In the boys race, Belmont's star senior and captain Stephen Carvalho paced the field from the start and took the tape in 16:27. However, he was followed by a hard charging pack of Minutemen. As they have all season, the captains led the way for LHS. Senior Selvin Backert was first across the line for The Minutemen (16:46). He was followed by fellow classmates Adam Bernstein (16:58) and Matt McAlarney (17:02). Next across the line was a trio of sophomores Graham Bracken (17:27), Thomas Lane (17:37), and Evan Eberle (17:45). Senior Jack Stevens crossed the line in a time of 17:46, and with his finish the final score was set. Along with the top seven finishers, senior Josh Backert used a strong finish to complete a big PR of 18:19. Freshman Aiden McPhee (18:35) had a breakout race running on his first 5k course this season. LHS's final varsity runner was freshman Antonio Lopez who finished in a time of 18:44.

The Minutemen are back in action Monday as they welcome Arlington to Lincoln Field. While the Spy Ponders graduated four of the five boys - including 5000m National Champion Ryan Oosting - who twice bested LHS last year, it will still be a chance for The Minutemen to re-assert themselves as the class of the League. The meet is set to begin at 4 o'clock.
