NEWBURYPORT, MA - After months of build up for what has the potential to be a special fall for the The Minutemen, the 2019 season finally got underway at the Clipper Relays. In what has become LHS's annual kickoff to the cross country season, schools break their teams up into three person relays with each leg running two miles. Both the boys and girls teams had strong performances, with the teams' depths being showcased.
The boys from Wellesley successfully defended their title from last year, winning with a time of 30:02. LHS's top team was made up of a trio of senior captains - Adam Bernstein (10:04), Matt McAlarney (10:06), and Micah Benson (10:16) - who were able to place third overall in a time of 30:27. In addition to their top team, The Minutemen's second team made up of junior captain Max DiCerbo (10:13), sophomore Evan Eberle (10:19), and senior captain Selvin Backert (10:23) were able to finish sixth overall in a time of 30:56, giving LHS the distinction of being the only school to place two teams in the top 10. Sophomores Graham Bracken (10:23) and Traver Smith III (10:26) ran strong legs for their relays. While seniors Seth Cutler (10:31) and Jack Stevens (10:36) rounded out The Minutemen's top 10 runners.
Just as in the boys race, the 2018 champions - the girls from Exeter High School (NH) - were able to once again take home the title, winning the race in 36:05. The Minutemen's top team was made up of senior captains Danna Ofek and Pauline Steines, as well as freshman newcomer Mirra Payson who ran very well in her high school debut. Ofek led her The Minutemen with an 11:49 split to begin the race before handing off to Payson. The freshman harrier was able to run a strong split (12:09) to keep the girls in contention going into the anchor leg. Taking the baton as the anchor, Steines was able to cover the slightly-longer-than two miles in 12:22 to bring home the team in fourth place overall in a time of 36:21. As was also the case in the boys race, The Minutemen's second team was the only 'B' team in the field that was able to finish in the top 10. Junior Anna Nelson started things off with a 12:32 split before handing off to sophomore Clara Fu (12:56). After Fu, another freshman - Ruby Fehm - was able to come through with a strong high school debut of her own. Her time of 12:27 ranked her third on the team and helped capture a ninth place finish (37:56) for her relay. Rounding out the top 10 performances for the girls was junior Lauren Sterne (13:01), sophomore Julia Lennon-Newell (12:51), junior Zoe Gu (13:03), and junior Maude Hajjaj (13:09).
Up Next
The Minutemen will begin their Middlesex League schedule on Tuesday September 17th with a crossover dual meet against Wakefield. The home opener - at Lincoln Field - is set to begin at 4:00pm.
